Should cull coins be destroyed?

I know that they're ok for key date fillers and that if you're on a tight budget, but what about common date coins that are just plain nasty? Shouldt they be melted and put out of their misery? Or kept but scorned, as they're still part of our history.

Michael seems to be the voice of reason here.
They are `easy movers` so they still may be worth something to some(many).
    Great response Michael.

    I concur with Uncle Joe.

Besides how bad does the coin have to be before it's called a cull?

nope. some of the rarest large cent varieties are known practically only as culls. ditto for colonials. a couple of the 1802 half-dimes that are generously graded "po-1" are actually cull.

that is unless you are using the defintion of cull that the date is unreadable. in that case, i say melt the sucker.

  • No, cull coins should not be destroyed.
New varieties are being found all the time. Sometimes only one coin of a certain variety is identified, and many times that lone coin is low grade or a cull.
Also, rare known varieties are found from time to time on over looked low grade coins.
Another thing, not all collectors can afford problem free and high grade coins, yet they still get much pleasure from this hobby with the low grade and cull coins they can afford.

  • Cull to whom? I know this is the coin board, but I mostly do vintage marbles. I have gotten some of my suweeetest marbles out of the dealer's dollar buckets at shows. They put all of their chipped up, dinged, not so well marked, common and undesignated, (that they know of) stuff in those buckets, and it is pure joy to pull out a few gems, quietly, or squealing and giggling, pay my dollar and plow my way through the throng to show my brother what I got. I have gotten some very valuable marbles out of dollar buckets, marbles in the hundreds of dollars range.
Before completely destroying old coins, even ones with no dates on them, I think I would make a little framed display on black velvet or something and donate them to a local school or library. Who knows what little kid might just become inspired, and in what way. Maybe it will boost their interest in coins, history, chemistry, speculation and investing, who knows. That is my take. Oh yeah, and if you do that, donate a coin book with it, so they can learn, or learn to learn. That is what I think.

  • If the type and date can be identified, either spend it, sell it, give it away or collect it. I would never destroy any coin. It may be worth something to someone.
  • They are part of history. So my answer is noooooooooooooo. Keep em.image Rotts
