Submission Results

Well I'll be darned. I finally joined the collectors club so I could cut out the middle man and send to PCGS directly. Sent in four coins direct from a 58 mint set I had around just for fun. Sent in three Franklins, I had them all graded as 65's, no FBL... and a wonderfully toned quarter that was the reason I bought the set in the first place.
Truly outstanding toning. When I really gave the quarter the close examination, though... I thought it might 65, probably 64. Here are the results:

1 60050271 1958-D 50C MS64FL
2 60050272 1958 50C MS66
3 60050273 1958 50C MS66
4 60050274 1958-D 25C MS67

I am stunned about the quarter. Happy, but surprised. All in all not bad. The Franklins are all nice, eye appealing coins, too.

Now... I have a couple 58-D Lincoln cents still in from the same set.
Great colorful toning... I was going to happy if they 64'd RB... I wait with baited breath.

    Ditto what Wayne said.image

  • Russ and Wayne (and everyone)--
I'd love to show you a picture of the quarter, but the coins aren't back yet, and.... I'm one of those dinosaur's without a camera. Maybe Russ would take it's picture for me?

I will figure out a way to get a photo when it's back. Like I said, I bought the mint set based on that coin alone.

I realize that I didn't get one grade correct in my submission, as I had 65,65,65, 64 (with all I had been hearing about tight grading).
The toning obviously went into play big time with the quarter. I am not complaining at all. One happy camper.

Great results, congratulations! Just goes to show that all the major dealers who have been complaining about PCGS being "very tight lately" are full of crap, as usual. I'll have some submission results hopefully within a week to post, mostly early Jeffersons with (I believe) all full steps, most of which (I think) are 65's and maybe a 64 or two. Also two Peace dollars, one of which was given to me by my Grandfather (who now lives in New Mexico) which is one of the reasons I got into coin collecting in the first place (but it's probably an AU coin)
  • run out and buy a lottory ticket right now!!!

    good job all kidding aside.
may the force be with you.

Carl, way to go, don't feel bad on the quarter, they are a lot more difficult to grade then people like to admit. Keep me in mind if it ever goes on the market.

    Carl,

If you want, I'd be happy to. I think you're in my area?

  • I am Russ. I'm a 40 minute drive away. I've actually considered dropping in to meet you someday. Maybe I'll drop by with the quarter and you can smack me upside the head for the Mrs. Coinboard series.

IrishMike-- I will keep that in mind. I know you'd like this coin.

By the way, your 58-D in 67 is a pop 73/0...pop top! pop top! image
  • Wow Robert, pure gravy. Since I wasn't expecting a 67, I never even checked the Pop. Thanks for the info!

And Russ, we'll see you one day soon. I'll call first.

Congradulations on your submission. I would also love to see the quarter when you get the ability.
I submitt to PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. Every now and then, the coin that I think will grade the lowest,
ends up grading the highest and the coin that I think will grade the highest will grade lower. It happens
about every fourth or fifth submission, like clockwork. You will see that with time as you start to
submitt regularly. The quarter must have exceptional eye appeal despite the technical grade you though it would come back as. Eye appeal is everything!!!

  • Clankeye, Very nice submission (would that be "VNS" on the internet?) The .25 is very cool, and the 66s aren't bad, either. Way to go!

wingedliberty, I understand what you mean. I've actually had an MS70 that I thought was a 69 and an MS68 that I thought was a 66 on the same invoice. Eye appeal is never something to underrate when grading. The more I find out about the ratio of technical grade vs. beauty grade, the more I find out that it is more important to study even more on the subject coins.

    Carl:
PCGS daily price guide on the quarter is $250 and Numismedia FMV is $275, so basically you
have a $150 coin, plus the irreplacable eye appeal that is priceless, hence we are eager for a photo.imageimage
And yes!!!, "pure gravy!!" is right!!, way to go!!

I had a Lexington/Concord 50c that I thought was a 62 technically, based on lustre, and contact marks,
It had incredible lavender/green peripheral toning, came back a PCGS-64.
As I always say EYE APPEAL WILL ALWAYS OVERIDE THE TECHNICAL GRADE. I have seen it hundreds
of times on hundreds of slabs with all grading services.

    hey clank

i'd have to agree with irishmike about the quarter. i have a hard time judging strike on the obverse cause of the weak hair detail. maybe you found a niche to fit yourself into!!!image

hey, if i was you, i'd mess with russ's head a little bit. show up and go scope out his shop. see if you can catch him online at the forum and ask for change for a phone call or something, hand him a pocket-worn 1964 kennedy and watch for the reaction.image

  • Quick story about the 58 mint set. I won an eBay auction for a 57 mint set, turns out the seller is in Seattle, so I go out to pick it up in person. Nice set. And he mentions he also has a 58 set that didn't sell on eBay, he shows it to me and "the quarter" instantly just grabs my eye. He wanted $125.00 for the set, and my budget was a little stretched so I went home with just the 57 set I had won on eBay. But "the quarter" kept knawing at me... I couldn't get it out of my head. So a couple days later I went back and bought the 58 set too. Very glad I did now.

I guess I'm kind of a technical, paranoid grader. I try to keep it so I won't be too disappointed if I'm wrong. But upside is how happy you can feel when you're wrong!

Edited to add, I know... it's not the 33 Saint.
