Should an acid dated coin be described as such?

I feel that it should. Here's a coin in which the date has clearly been treated to bring it out (to a very limited extent) yet there is no mention by the grading service or the seller.

1918/7-S Quarter

Just doesn't seem right to me, but I guess most people wouldn't care.

  • It should be brough to attention by every service - or bodybagged if that is their policy.

ANACS shouldn't have did that. Maybe it was treated then cleaned up and went bad after it was slabbed. No way ANACS would have slabbed it looking like that.
To answer your ? yes it should be described because any damage should be described. Sellers try to take advantage of newbies by not describing damage because they think if they have a pict they should be able to see it for themselves. I notice Heritage didn't mention it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • An acid dated coin has altered surfaces and as such should never get into a slab or at the very least it should be stated on the slab and receive a net grade.

How did they acid date it? I always thought that acid dating only worked on nickels

If you can see the date on this coin (which I can't given the picture) then SOMETHING was done to it because most if not all SLQ's below the grade of VG you can't see the date. I'm surprised ANACS didn't note this on the slab. Odd.

EDIT: I should have said Type 1 or 2 SLQ's.

I've got to agree with Dog. No way would anacs not label that. Must have been "dr'd" and got by them, then turned colors.

I've seen a 1918/7-D Buffalo in an ANACS slab that was labeled "Acid Date" and net-graded. Perhaps this coin was just stained?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

i remember the buffalo g-details, net ag acid-coin in the anacs holder. the prob' w/ this one is it has virtually fine details. so, "fine details net ag"? maybe wouldn't make sense. or maybe it was an oversight. it is the kind of coin that should never be bought sight-unseen anyhow.

the real issue may be: why didn't heritage mention it.
