Grading while looking through plastic

Do you think that PCGS is harsher with crossovers because they have to evaluate the coins through the holders? In other words, for them to risk cracking out the coin, would it have to look very high end for the grade? Maybe they won’t cross an MS65 unless it’s an MS65+++ in their opinion. Do you think that there would be a greater chance of a coin crossing over if it were raw?

  • It does usually have a better chance of crossing if raw. There is no perceived bias, and like you said, it is easier to grade raw. PCGS also dosen't have to worry about the liability of the coin being a lower grade once cracked.
