PCI vrs PCGS

I had my bust dime slabbed by PCI at VF20 now if it was slabbed by PCGS how much difference in price would it be?The dime is 1798/1797.What would a PCI VF20 be equal to in a PCGS grade?I guess this is the question I am asking.

It depends on when PCI slabbed your coin. If they did it when they first starated their business, the two grades could be similar. If it was done recently there could be a 10 to 20 point difference.

At first PCI was crediable and strived to become a company that would compete with PCGS and NGC. Unfortunately when their failed to get a foothold in the business (e.g. they never made it to the Blue Sheet) they let their quality slip. I guess they could not survive otherwise, but now their brand name is not very good.

Check the "a" in the word "mintage" in the lower left of the insert. The OLD PCI will have a different 'a' than the newer font- newer PCI. The dollar sign (" $ ") is also a giveaway, but it won't be on your coin (obviously).

One other coins too the giveaway is the slash mark between the date and MM. It'll be much longer and more pronounced on the older PCI's.

Have your tried the attachments spot at the bottom? I'm frustrated with pictures too, and that's the only way I can do it.

Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. If you can create .JPG pictures and can reduce them to less than 50 Kb or less, you can used this. Just browse your files, upload them and attach the pictures.

Thank you: The trouble with me is I'm to impatient.

tough to tell, but that looks like a great coin. in pci's early days, they were clueless grading draped bust material, and i picked up some serious steals in their undergraded slabs. how much you want for it?!?!?!

  • It is transitional mule Hallmark style PCI slab issued sometime in late 1999 that I have not seen before. It has the front style used from late 1999 to March 2002 but the back label with the two "code groups" below the bar code was the standard from the start of the PCI Hallmark style slab in Jan of 1992 until it was changed to a single group in late 1999.

I need the back of this slab posted too so that I can add this transitional variety to the slab book.

    SCRAP ALL OF THE ABOVE!

I mis- read silverandvinyls description. I thought he meant that both groups were below the barcode. This is one of the "bad" PCI slabs issued between Sept of 2001 amd March 2002 while PCI was owned by Leslie Shade III. I missed the clue about the 9 digit serial number. the early ones had 10 digit numbers and the late 99 - Sept 2001 had 14 digit serial numbers.

It's tough to tell. You really need a close-up of the coin to really nail it, but from what I can see it looks like a nice piece. Check for bent, holed and repaired or cleaned a recolored. If none of thse things pop up, it's a keeper. I'm very disappointed with the early coins I see in AU holders these days let alove VF-20!

  • Bill:The only things I can tell you about this coin is:
#1.I've had it for atleast 45 years and over the years it started to tone(but a flat golden tone). The coin has never been in anything outside a brown envelope,a box ,open on my dresser, desk drawer etc.WhenI got this coin it had a dull silver finish. There are no plug holes,it's not bent but there are some minor scratches on the obverse. The reverse is a lot better. It's not like that bust quarter that was on e-bay 4 or 5 months ago.You can read everything on mine.Another thing, there are little(tiny) brownspots on it.I see 3 on the reverse and 4 or five on the obverse. The only reason I had it slabbed was a friend of mine wanted to buy it and at the time I did not want to sell it.So,he told me to have it slabbed to preserve it. I will try and show the reverse of the slab.Just incase I can't do iton the reverse it says PCI ..1009611001.above the bar code and below the bar code it has EAD987.

  • Conder: you might be right about the date when the coin was slabbed.I know it has'nt been to long.I think it falls right into the dates that you mentioned.Somewher between 2000 and 2001.I'm just not sure.I'm not trying to HOSE anyone because I never really thought about selling it.I kinda like the history it may have.

  • Dorkkarl and Bill:I appreciate your interest.I'll tell ya it's very tempting to let it go.If you want to throw some offers around I'll take it up with my wife.Every once in awhile she will pull it out and look at it.Sometimes we talk about what it was like back then and thinkabout the last person who had in his or hers pocket. This coin was minted the last year in George Washinton term as President of the USA.Now that's history. You guys can PM me and I'll let you know.I'm not saying I will sell it but I will keep you guys in mind.I guess it will be on what the stock market does?????????
