Very Scary. But that could happen anywhere even here. Fortunately, it hasn't happened to me.

<< <i>First, buyers are reluctant to post negative feedback about a seller out of the entirely justified fear that the seller will post "retaliatory" negative feedback. >>

That is the biggest failing in the eBay feedback system and why it can frequently be useless in evaluating the real performance of a seller. There are plenty of sellers who deserve far more negatives than they've actually received simply because the buyers were too gutless to take a stand.

I loved this part of the story:

Since 1999, eBay has employed a team of specialists -- it won't disclose how large -- to detect and investigate fraud.

Yeah right! I am no detective but I see plenty of fraud by some well known powersellers claiming their coins are "rare", "scarce", "unique", etc. One even has the audacity to say he is honest and ethical in his auctions. If he has to say it then he isn't!

I'm not worried; I don't buy any coins from E-Bay from anyone I either don't know personally or on whom I have several reliable references. Call me a bit paranoid, but I've never been ripped off in this kind of scenario.

Ive never used ebay but I've bought numerous auctions on Yahoo auctions. Twice I was on the edges of what appeared to be scams, and involved autographed photos. In one, the guy didn't give me an address to send payment, so I didn't get stung, but turns out he was hitting people that did the PayPal thing...the other was a guy who ended up getting a lot of neg feedback for not sending merchandise...but I actually got my picture before the fire storm started. On a couple of instances, I had stuff "lost in shipment"...but got the postal insurance reimbursement...and have dealt with those particular guys several times with nothing but positive results, so I think that was legit.

    I guess I've been lucky
