If I'm not mistaken, the GSA released what are referred to as "Blue" or "Soft" packs. They contained both circs and uncs and Peace or Morgan.

There were also non-CC hard packs. I've got a 1886-P in one. The soft packs had Morgan and Peace dollars. I've also heard of a Seated Liberty dollar in a soft pack.

I'd like to find out how many dates and mints were available in the hard packs and the scarcity of each.

  • Blackhaw that is a D-- good question? Maybe someone will let us know. Thanks to each for your reply. Some where in the recess of my mind I seem to remember that ridding in a BLACKHAW.Snake

The GSA released thousands of silver dollars in bags that were sealed in bag as an old inventory at the Treasury. When a detailed audit was performed in the early 70's, it was found that many bags of dollars were silver morgans, peace and a very few seated dollars. These bags had not been searched in years and were carried over year to year in the accounting. The coins were of many dates and grades. The CC's were later marketed in the hard plastic, while a smaller amount of common dollars had a hard plastic. Most of the low grade and circulated dollars had a soft plastic pack, much like the IKE unc. silver blue packs. The early non CC dollars in hard plastic had GSA on the holder and were very limited in supply, while the soft plasic were generally more plentiful. The first auction of the dollars did not contain many CCs and was smaller in size. The second auction was much more professional and had many CC's. The second auction was presented with much more hype. I don't think there were any more auctions, but I could be mistaken.

  • The most knowledgeable person on GSA's is our GSA expert the GSAGUY. He can offer us the info you need. And as Blackhawk stated he owns the only Seated Liberty Dollar ever issued by the GSA. I had the pleasure of buying a 1885 CC morgan from him. If anyone is looking to buy any GSA Morgans contact him, he is top notch seller on the forum.....image

Thanks Beatlemen for those kind words.

Snake, GSA records show a total of 27,980 non-CC uncirculated silver dollars sold in GSA hardpacks. However, no records of the dates and mintmarks were recorded. I believe I've got the most complete collection of these hardpack coins as I have a total of 26 different dates and mintmarks. Other advanced collectors with whom I correspond have about 16 different dates and mintmarks.

For those of you who are interested in the GSA sale, I'm close to completion with a book on the subject. In the interim, I'd be happy to answer any specific questions that I can.

I've also attached a scan of the only known Seated Liberty Dollar sold by the GSA. It's in a softpack and was originally sold for $3.00!!!

  • Hi Bryan,

I remember reading about that coin in CW awhile back. Really look forward to reading your book when it is completed. I often wish I had been born just a few years earlier so I could have taken part in that event...well not too many years earlier image

    Clevegreg,

You're right. Very recently that coin was mentioned in an article in Coin World. I sent them a scan, but they never responded.

Snake and Blackhawk, for the record, my book covers each non-CC date/mintmark and ranks each according to scarcity. This data will come as quite a surprise to some dealers.

I think you guys will enjoy the info.

  • Good to hear from you Gsaguy. Just today, I was wondering where you were. Good to know you are still about. I for one, look forward to your book. Even though, I don't collect Morgans anymore, I look forward to being privy to all the knowlege you have stockpiled over the years.

    Dog,

Unfortunately, those non-CC dates/mintmarks quoted from Van Allen & Mallis were just a guess on their part. In later quotes, Van Allen himself has said that he has no idea of the actual non-CC dates included the GSA hardpack sale as no formal records were kept.

Interestingly, I've seen numerous references to the 87-O as one date that was in the sale. But after almost 20 years of collecting these coins, I've yet to see a single example in a GSA hardpack.

    Thanks!

  • Gsaguy,

Had you ever seen the only 1892 CC, 1889 CC or 1893 CC Morgan GSA in existence? Just curious how much are they worth being one of a kind $100,000? Thanks

    Beatlemen,

I've got photographs of what's claimed to be THE 89-CC and will soon examine personally the 93-CC. I don't yet know if it's authentic but hope to make that determination after careful examination of the coin.

    As for value, that's a very good question....and one that I can't yet answer.image
