$80,000 coin collection stolen

from an individuals home, protected by a "LARGE GUN SAFE". Took the safe, and the coins. p. 72 of the latest coin world. Safety Deposit box, here I come. Although I only work about 4 hours a day and have 3 German Shepards to guard my home, coins just aren't safe at home, regardless.

  • What a bummer, $80,000 is a good sized chunk o' change. I keep my coins in a safety deposit box and it buys me a lot of peace of mind. Granted, it is a bummer having to travel to the bank and go through all of the formalities of getting into my box, but I feel it is well worth it.
  • I have several bookcases in my home. There are a few books in the cases that aren't really books - justcoin albums. No one will or would ever know....unless they were a friend- and then we would find them. Otherwise - the time constraints of going through every book would keep a potential robber here for avery very longtime - not worth it.

Best part is that I can play with these goodies anytime I want image

My home was burgarized once. Though nothing of value was taken, I made a point of not keeping any valuables at home after that. If I want to 'visit' my coins, I go to the safety deposit box.

Even if the poor guy had adequate insurance, unless his entire collection consisted of 1881 S Morgans in MS 65, it'll take years for him to put that sort of collection back together.

definitely a sad story. i got most of my coins split up among three safety-deposit boxes. call me paranoid. but i still have about $25,000 worth at home at any given time. yikes! that's why i'm extremely careful about giving out address, phone#, etc, especially here on the 'net.

One person here, some time ago (cannot remember who), had this advice that a policeman gave him. That you have a small display with some cheap coins in it marked "RARE" and with inflated values. A thief, when finding what they think is a big score, will grab it and generally run and not press their luck in looking for something else. Makes sense as most criminals aren't smart about coins. No guarantees, of course, but may help.

  • Think about this one folks. Large gun safe is hauled away with $80k in coins. My immediate thought?

1] Coins were insured and guy did it as insurance fraud case [happens morethan you think]

    or, most likely,

2] An inside job. A fellow collector, housekeeper, plumber, etc. or someone who KNEW what was in the safe or KNEW there was a safe. How burglars do their deed ready to carry away a safe unless they KNOW in ADVANCE there is a safe? How many people did it take? What eqipment did they use? Regardless it takes planning and this was no ordinary robbery.

I don't fear the snatch and grab burglar but I do fear the minimum wage jockey working at the auction house, the vest pocket dealer behind in his mortgage, etc. setting me up with Guido. Hence, everything is in a bank vault.

Somewhat related to comments by Its4real and NWCS... Once my home was broken into. The thieves took a number of junky foreign coins, wheat cents and old Jefferson nickels I had stored loosely in a desk drawer, while leaving untouched much more valuable coins, including a completed Buffalo Nickel collection, in coin albums in the bookshelf right next to the desk. I was very fortunate.
  • I keep mine at home in a large gun safe. The empty weight is 650lbs+ and with all of the stuff in it it must be close to 1000lbs. It took me and two other people with a heavy duty dolly to move it into the house when new. I don't think I have a lot to worry about someone carting it out.
  • I have one of those "large gun safes" that I keep Class 3 firearms in.

Mine is in the basement bolted to the concrete floor and wall. It also weighs a bit over 1,000 pounds. If/when I ever move, the safe is going to be left behind.

Sounds like somebody didn't bolt their safe down.
