Are coin collectors too sensitive?

I have not been a part of this group long, since about August 2002, but it appears to me so many on here are too sensitive about others opinions on their coins, collections, price paid / sold, bids, slabs, etc.
The egos in this hobby are way too large. Ironically the industry almost strokes it with their pedigree nonsense, arcane lingo, fascade of integrity, etc. Fortunately, the bulk of collectors are oblivious to all this silliness. I know many collectors who have never heard of slabbed coins nor bought a coin in decades but I can assure you their collections would bring in the auction house buyers flying in like vultures.
Interestingly, many are not offended by non collectors who think our hobby is silly. But when someone slams our interest in 18th century MS70 coins from Afghanistan, look out. There will be a pissing match on the forum!
If someone will not let you bid on their coins, their loss. If someone is asking too much for their coins, find another seller. If someone will not buy your coins, find another buyer. Is it that difficult? OK, so your ego may be hurt but I can think of worse things in life.
I collect other items and belong to collector groups but none rival the whining and back biting that exists here. It does get tedious at times. I find this somewhat sad because many here have important knowledge / experience to share and I have learned alot in a few months.
Coin collecting is a hobby, it is not what we are judged by! Hopefully the people we care about judge us by our character.

Yes, those of us w/big egos (and yes, I admit to having one) just can't live our lives without chiming in on some issue we have no relationship to. Having something written that goes out to hundreds or even thousands of readers really is a power rush. My guess is by commenting on these boards its the only way most people will ever feel important. It is pathetic, but thats life.
Maybe someone who has a degree in Psychology can explain the reason for all the negativity that gets written-especially when the writers are not involved in the situation.

JUST SAY NO TO WANNABES! They lurk and prey on unwitting collectors in chatrooms!
You said:
18th century MS70 coins from Afghanistan are all usually overgraded
That does it! You and me, outside! We are going to settle this once and for all!
Would you hit an old man?

<< <i>There has to be some ego involved for people to spend thousands on a coin. >>
Actually, I think that I am an egomaniac with an inferiority complex.
to a coin collector my pharmacist compadre. Bear(The old Thrifty Drug RX)

I thought that us pharmacists were a part of the most trusted profession. We could never be kleptomaniacs. However, I have never met a pharmacist yet who isn't maybe just a tad neurotic.
I'm a serious collector but I don't take everything here seriously, I just have fun. Maybe that's why I go into the flame threads poking fun at both sides and everybody else.
But I am a sensitive type of guy at heart and if you don't like my collection of Sample Slabs I'll bounce you on your pointy head!

that will arrive tommorrow after I get back from work. One has to be passionate to collect coins.
People who are interested in history, grading, and are numbers oriented, are not passive. We are
a sensitive bunch.

Afghani coins from the 18th century. Can't we all just get along?

Old Yeller died?!!?
My mom made me leave the room right before the ending but she later told me everyone lived happily ever after. Dang.
Ok, now I'm depressed.

Coin Collecting is not a hobby for many here, it is their bread and butter, thats the problem!

I've always wondered what happens when (and if) the belligerents in these posts meet? Insults and accusations face to face? Punches thrown? A "Brawl on the Bourse"? It would be interesting to learn what happens. Has anyone here actually met the object of their disdain from these forums?
Inquiring minds want to know....

You know that's a fake! Someone has tampered with that holder.
I checked the ACG website and that slab number is for a 1933 $20 MS70.
BTW that's U.S. $20 !
I can't say whether "coin collectors" are too sensitive or not. I believe that people in general are either too sensitive or insensitive.
I also think that you probably see the agressiveness/defensiveness in this forum more, because unlike other collectibles, US Coins are somewhat limited in variety compared to other collectibles. What I'm trying to say is, most coins can be directly compared among collectors, whereas porcelin, teddy bears, whatever don't lend themselves to having to be identical. The more variety of like specimens, the less you can compare mine to yours. For example, my 1885CC in XX grade SHOULD exhibit specific qualities and can be directly compared to someone else's of the same specifications, whereas, my diecast Rolls Royce Silvercloud, or my "Steiff" teddy bear, or this particular gemstone, and on and on are less likely to be identical. Inviduality and variety and sentimentality is the norm and so there is less credence to direct comparison.
I think you would find that the same personalities that you may find obnoxious (my word) in this forum, would be the same whether you are talking about collectibles or relationships.
they would all have a great time and probably
go to lunch together. Most of us are a heck of a lot nicer
in person then our cyber personna i suspect. Gosh, I certainly
hope so or we got a bunch of miserable sidewinders on this here Forum.

I think I may have seen Cobb at a Long Beach show once. I'm pretty sure that was him passing by our table and checking us out.
I think what you are seeing is the sad fact that many people find it easier to tell someone else that he or she is full of **** rather than say something positive about themselves.
Personally, in no particular order, I like speaking foreign languages, travelling to Latin America, long distance running and coin collecting. If others like it, fine. If they don't like it, that's fine too.
In general, I'm very tolerant of things that don't affect me personally. I'm not very sensitive, though.
While this has its downside, it has kept me from doing a number of stupid things over the years.

Dog, do you work at PCGS?
I think people can get upset if they have paid thousands for this or that and they are trying to sell. Profits are at stake if someone badmouths coin x and promotes coin y. If I am selling my colorized Liberian commemoratives, I'll be launching a publicity campaign to create demand. I will defend the reputation of my fine product in an effort to protect past investments and future profits.
Not that there is anything wrong with colorized Liberian commemoratives....
