UPDATED...Picked up a Nice Franklin Half today at local dealer. Grade added to last post!

I know nothing about these. The toning caught my eye and appears to be original album? toning. I got it from my local dealer. He looked at it with a loupe when cashing me out and said "I believe you got me on this one". We laughed. I don't think I did too bad for 16.00. It's my dad's birthyear and I'm going to get it slabbed and give to him for Christmas.

Goose - You did REAL well! After the 50-D, that is the toughest Franklin to find with nice color. Just looking at the pic, you've got high end for the date.

    Regards,
    Daryl
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
  • Nice origional half. I'd give it a MS64 FBL. Not a bad price either.
  • Off topic but can't resist sending this as I love your rocking radio!

    Sweet. Very sweet.

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • Not a bad deal for $16.00! This 49-D has really nice color for a date that normally comes with lousy toning. It is also surprisingly clean and is one of the hardest dates to come by in gem condition. This one comes really close!

    Nice find!

Had to go back 19 pages, but I found it. Let me begin with the reiteration that I firmly believe you have to get up close and personal with a coin to provide an accurate grade. The very attractive toning adds to the difficulty of providing a grade in that it can hide some marks. Though, I want to commend you on your scans/photos. I find it impossible to get that detail with my HP scanner.

Well, you definitely stole one here! A very nice find for $16. A super tough coin in 65 or better! Typically, if you lose the bell lines, it is just left of the Bell's crack and that is where your scan gets a little dark and I can't see if they are complete. What I can see of the bell lines, they appear very distinct and bold. That reverse is awfully well struck with a very clear "Pass and Stow". I agree with you, the toning looks original. It "appears" you have enough chatter in the obverse fields to keep the coin at MS-64 and with the benefit of the doubt, FBL. That color might get you to 65.

I look forward to seeing the coin in it's holder. When do you expect it back? Next time you go back to your local coin dealer, I bet he tells you all future purchases are subject to a surcharge. CONGRATULATIONS!!

    LOL!!!
I would be willing to bet that he makes up for this one on several of my purchases from him in the future!
  • Have to add I really like that one, Goose. I think you did very well.

AU58....Tbig just had to call them because they didn't note it as a D mint!!!

I didn't see any wear on it but didn't think IMO it was a Gem.
Anyways, dad will sure like it.
Got to be one of the nicest AU58's around!! LOL
  • Well, I have always said it is difficult to accurately grade a coin by scan, though some people seem to think it is easy.

However, I would never have guessed a grade as low as AU-58! Man, they were pretty harsh with coin. I was concerned about the middle 2 bell lines of the top 4, just left of the bell's crack. That is where you typically have the most problem and it appeared so in your scan. It is still a very attractive coin and I hope your Dad enjoys his present!

PCGs grades the lower lines which are full and un-interrupted, I had this peg'd easily for FBL. I have some FBL coins that have hits in the same area as yours does and it didn't affect the coins getting the desgination. NCG looks at all 7 lines, the coin did seem to have some wear in the cheek area but au58?????? It is always hard to tell from pics, but I think HepDaddyHall and the gang were very brutal with you on this one! image
