Need Your Help...... $50/ Month......

I've got $50/mo to spend on coins. I would like to buy one coin per month. What series would give me the best bang for my buck? Would a type set be better? Thanks for you input!

It depends on your definition of the most bang for the buck.

Do you want quantity, quality, the easiest collection to complete etc. What do you want and or like?

A little more info will help you to determine the best use of your $50./mo.

Buffalo nickels are a lot of fun: you can get nice BU examples for the later years for that price, and F-VF examples for earlier years. The downside is there are a few stoppers that are quite expensive, even at low grades.

A short set of Walkers could be fun, too. A pretty, large and silver coin. Can't really go wrong there!

MS-64 FBL franklins you get lots of bang for your buck there, just make sure to find a decent one 64's can really differ in looks. Lots of potential for them to go up to.
  • You can get most of the common date Mercury dimes with FSB in MS-65/66 condition for under $50. And I agree with mbbiker on the fbl frankies.

Toned Roosevelt Dimes - not slabbed, but raw to be placed in an album. That's one of the things I'm doing now. Real pretty colors, fairly easy to find and not that expensive. Plus when you see all those little dimes, toned different colors in an album it really is stunning.

I'd go with a morgan a month. Common dates like 1879S, 1880S - 1882S, etc can be had in MS64 for $50 and you can downgrade in grade as needed for other issues.
  • Proof Kennedys. No bang for the buck but most can be had in PR69 for under $50.00.

  • By bang, I mean quality with reasonable chance of increasing in value. Thanks for the ideas, keep'em coming!

    Sacs at face value.
  • ancients, without a doubt, the most bang for your buck.
  • I would have to go with uncirculated Morgans and Peace dollars (common dates of course) for 50.00/mo.

I would recommend a 20th century type set for you. All coins are reasonably cheap. I only have about $100-$150 to spend a month and I'm going for a full US type set as well as a set of (non slabbed) roosies, as well as a complete (raw) set of nazi coins and a set of Aussie florins and shillings... lol. I always have some set that I can get something on.

  • I'm surprised no one mentioned Jeffersons. Toned Jeffs especially.

For some unknown reason, lately I can't stay away from nickels. Liberties, Buffs and Jeffs have got me in a strangle hold. Always had been a Morgan man, 'til about 3 months ago.

If you want to take the decision making out of it, join one of those collector clubs that send you THEIR choice of coins. Littleton and South Park come to mind. If you want to "invest" that is one way to go.
Otherwise, collecting is supposed to please you. Having someone tell you what to collect doesn't make sense.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • What about starting with the Gold $5.00 1/10oz American Eagle coins? They are reasonable and a nice starter coin for modern collection sets.image

  • Two suggestions both already stated. I really like the morgan a month deal. You can complete a really good portion of the set in MS for $50 a coin. The other has to be 64FBL franklins, again you can complete the set in near GEM for $50 a coin.

  • Some good ideas here, I like FrattLaws (Hey Mike!) and DirtroadRiders ideas. It's also kinda cool to start a series be it Walkers, Franklins,Peace or Morgan dollars just collecting one example from each year is another way to go, then you can go back and finish the series by going and getting all the mint marks till your set is complete.

  • Try modern commeratives, with slab, under $50. And nice to look at, learn something.

I like the idea of bust halves, you can purchase these by dates, varieties etc. If you like a little research you can buy a couple of books and attribute them yourself. At fifty bucks a month I wouldn't waste my money on plastic. Think about owning a coin that is 175 years old and the history that must be behind it.
  • I would consider Modern Olympic Commemoratives. Bower's came out with strong buy. Also a large commemorative dealer said the Asian and Europoean market have "discovered" the commemorative's. But the activety is in Olympic Commemoratives.

I really side with Coulport on this.

I'd say that first you need to decide what you want to collect and then figure out how to fit it into your budget.

I've quadrupled (or more) my coin budget over the past ten years and buy coins now that I could only dream about then. But, I still like the coins I bought then because I bought what I liked.

Odds are that any coins you can buy on a $50/month budget aren't going to increase in value (unless you're really lucky) because you'll be buying common coins and common coins stay inexpensive for a reason - they're common!

By all means, if you like MS-63 Morgans or VF Bust halves, buy them and enjoy them - buy the books about them and have fun learning about them - just don't expect them to increase in value.

  • What DaveG said about increasing in value, plus another major problem -- buy/sell spreads on low-cost coins are a huge percentage of the coin's value.

The good thing about low-cost coins, though, is that they're low cost. image I think you'd be much happier in the long run just buying coins within your discretionary budget that you find enjoyable.

    Especially if they're Ikes. image

Seriously, Ikes (and other modern series) are still largely underappreciated. It is much easier to cherry-pick a nice modern (in high-grade or scarce variety) than with older coins where values are much more widely known.

So a modern series can be a great way to get some bargains if you've got more time than money.

type sets.. I would go with a type set that way any coin that you like will have a spot in your set. its hard for me to focus on just one series.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

  • Coronet head large cents 1840-57 in VF-30 to XF-40. Nice set, no rare dates. Other than that I too like the bust halves. It is possible to put together the whole set except for the 1815 at $50/month although you will have to go for lower graded coins on the early dates but still VG-F coins. The later date coins can be VF20 - VF30.
