Your `unique` coin......

Everyones got one I bet. That coin your sure no one else has.Not just an odd RPD,OMM,DD,etc...but that unique error of some kind.Your sure its worth a ton of money, but its difficult to have everyone else see it the way you do.

I have a `99 silver S Proof Dime with `golden` olive leaves on the left side of the reverse.
I think its maybe unique but its a minor alloy-mix error I,ve been told.I agree its minor (gotta use a loupe to see it well) but its a neat thing to have I guess.

Whats your unique coin.True or perceived.

    Yup.,Ol`King of the Deadthreads.

    Theres my moniker right there.image
  • Cam! you have to let the coffee hit in the mornings! LOL

I've been thinking about your thread and which coin I felt was unique in my collection. I don't have a whole lot that's very unique or out of the ordinary, but I do have a few favorites that I think are unique onto themselves. One of my favorites is this one:

    image

To most people it may not be anything out of the ordinary, but to me it's a very unique coin. First of all, you don't see this color combination on a lot of Franklins. And you don't usually see this color combination particularly on 60's Franlins, which, if they're toned, tend to be rather drab (not always!). Anyway, a couple of other unique features about the coin is how well struck it is. It's in a PCGS 65 holder, but the strike is as bold as any I've ever seen on a Franklin. Very detailed and carved. The bell lines are surprisingly strong, although you can't see it on this picture. One unfortunate hit on the bottom bell lines keep this coin from being as strong a FBL coin as I've ever seen in the 60-63 portion of the series. Finally, the coin has amazing luster under the toning which gives the piece a really neat - almost lacquered quality to it. The coin is not part of my registry set, but as soon as I saw it I fell in love with it, so now it resides with the rest of the "gems" in a little spot all to itself.

I guess my most unique coin is the variety 2 1845-D Half Eagle (yea I know Dog97 there are only 3 people in the whole country collecting Branch Mint coins image). In searching auction records as far back as the 1980's only 3 have been seen (one in the Bass collection).

I have a swedish 2 kroner (can't remember date) that if the width of the date is 6 mm it is worth about $1500. If it is 5 mm, it is worth $15. I've never been able to measure with a precise enough ruler. image
  • I have a few of them but will only list 2 here. The first is my 1973-S Kennedy proof, you rarely see proof coins with multiple errors. The second is my 1847-O $10 Gold, it is currently the only $10 gold piece known to exist with major die rotation (rotation of 175°cw).

I have an 1871 Liberty Seated dollar struck in copper. Regardless of its listing in the Judd or pollack references, my research indicates that the piece I own is the only one that has surfaced in over 100 years. Oh, by the way it is graded PCGS66RB, and has monster red-green-blue toning.
So, I consider that it is highly likely to be unque, and in any event certainly the finest known (or unknown).
  • wow, u have a pic of that gemtone i collect the series and i have never heard of one that must be ultra rare.
    image
  • This one is only unique to me. It is a 50-D nickel that I way overpaid (around $25 which at the time was supposed to be a steal of a deal) for back in the mid-60s. Yes, I bought the hype and just happen to get the coin along with it. It is the only coin I have ever purchased solely for its "investment" value. I don't even collect the series. It is also the one coin I own that I have never enjoyed owning. I keep it just to remind myself that I will always remember to buy what I like and like what I buy.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

I've just bought this great proof state quarter where it looks like the MinuteMan is pissing and I only paid $90,000 for it image

Actually, I have a DDR Proof 73 Clad Ike, a 77 Proof Die Crack Quarter that are worth nothing, but since I found them I like'em. I also just got a 1922 Toned Peace that's either VAM 4 or 8 and is in the Top 50 hottest VAMs. Gotta send that one off to ANACS soon.

My most interesting is an 1882 IHC Snow-2. (Shylock helped me figure that one out, thanks SHylock).

Snow-2 is a broken date punch and part of the 2 is missing.

  • I have a 1957-D lincoln cent I got from Braddick that is PCGS65RB. It's unique because it's the only coin I've ever bought from Braddick.

  • I have a number of pop 1(0) coins but I wouldn't dare call them unique. They are pretty rare but in all likelyhood not unique. However, I do get lots of enjoyement out of them anyway.

    Frank,
That 1962 Half is a tough find!!! The great majority of gem 1962 Franklins will be brilliant or have lousy toning. That one is really nice!
  • I have a double struck 1999 Lincoln cent. The second strike was as strong as the first. The word Liberty is on there twice an is complete. Each double strike coin is an unique coin.

I don't own it, but I once heard a rumor that there was some coin out there that PCGS AND NGC saw about 10 times each and graded it the same each time. And, supposedly, EVERY dealer AND collector who saw it also agreed on the grade!

Unfortunatley, it was only a rumor, started by yours truly (actually, none of this is true, not even the part about my starting the rumor). That sure would qualify as a "unique coin", though, wouldn't it? image
  • Mark--
I was offered that coin. I passed. Technical grade was right on the money, but the eye-appeal was marginal.

Clankeye, too bad for you. I bought it (that "unique coin") and got it upgraded by 2 points on the first try. image

1913 Barber Half with a digit in the date missing. It wasn't filed down, the first digit is mostly gone and the half looks to be from the era of the Vikings sometime in 913 A.D.

I also had a machine doubled 1899-O that has dramatic doubling over most of the reverse lettering. I thought it was a double die, until someone popped my bubble. It is still pretty cool nonetheless.

I have lots of weird coins but this deep die cap is unusual. Yes, obv really looks like a beer cap. PCGS graded it MS66 RD.

Your right Frank.I posted at a slow time of day(sunrise),and didn`t give much response time before I started belly-aching.

Dog- Thats a cool capped-die .Did anyone notice the reverse image? Its Lincolns` profile enlarged, and upside down in the picture shown.Really neat.

Clankeye-Thanks for the encouragement and all but I,m not sure `Mr.Multipost` fits me. TJ,Shiroh,Braddick,or the like are the true multi-posters.....well ya,ok.In the sense I do tend to post my thoughts in parts rather than a single post.I do, seem to reply ,seemingly to myself huh,AND edit the hell out of my prior posts.....I,m all over the place sometimes.Oh well.Someones gotta be the nut around here.
The thing is...I think I have some company too.
