1913 Liberty Nickel

I remember a story from a while back about a 1913 Liberty nickel that was lost when a coin dealer was in a car accident. The coin was never recovered. Has anyone heard about this story or did I just dream it????

It's been posted here. There is some doubt that the dealer ever owned the coin.

I didn't think a dealer owned the coin. I though is was owned by a member of the family that formed the Renolds Tobacco Company. And I've heard it enough times and seen it in a enough books to feel certain that only 4 1913 Liberty nickels are now accounted for.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Here are some links. One claims there were 6 specimens another says the Reynolds specimen may
still be waiting to be found along some Carolina road but didn't say if it was North or South Carolina. All we need now is a little more detective work and someone in that area can take a metal detector out there and see what they come up with. We can use Mastahanky's map to find our candidate to do the search and........we'll all wait back here for the word.......sounds like a simple enough plan........if found, we can call it the US forum gang speciman........

  • There are 5, not 6, specimens. That to me directly from one of the men who owned all 5! When they came out of the E.H.R. Green collection they were housed in a small leather pouch with 7 spaces. 5 spaces housed the 1913 liberty heads, one housed a 1913 buffalo, and one housed the unique Judd 1790 1913 Buffalo die trial in copper. I believe that the 1913 Buffalo, the Judd 1790 and the pouch are still together in the same location.

Another item for discussion would be why aren't these nickels confiscated by the secret service? The 1933 20$ golds were produced and will be confiscated!

If the SS had it to do over, I doubt they would confiscate the 1933 $20.

The 1913 could be considered patterns, fantasy issues, legit presentation pieces, etc.

I talked briefly with a former owner of the 5 coins, Eric Newman, at the Denver ANA in 1996. He thought the coins were somewhat overratted and blown out of proportion. But, none-the-less, there were 5 coins at one time.

There isn't any info on who owned or what happened to the 5 speciman....
