Threatening emails from Ebay scam artist

Today, I happened upon another Ebay seller, using someone else's image to try to sell a coin he doesn't own. I notified him that I was on to him and he sent two emails threatening me.

This is the item number on Ebay : 1391794872. Sorry, I don't know how to provide the link.

If anyone can get the guy's name, address and phone number through Ebay ( I wasn't able to, but know some of you guys have capabilities I don't in that area), I'd very much appreciate it, as I'd like to report him to the police. Thanks.

    Where's the pic from?
  • Post the threatening e-mail!

Also, we may be able to determine some of his info from the header on the e-mail...at least back to his ISP, and then take it from there.

I just wrote him and asked for his info. We'll see if he comes through with it.
In the meantime, his name is a little to close to mine for comfort. . . image

    This should be fun.
  • Maybe if we all wrote to him to get his name and address he'd get spooked! image

I asked him for the certification number on the slab.
What is the sellers e-mail address?
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,530 ✭✭✭✭✭
EDIT: never mind. Bad link. I tried to access his contact info, but hit two eBay snags: 1) you must be involved in a transaction with someone to get their info. 2) Not all International users have accesible contact info.

Looks suspiciously like a cameo piece that R&I Coins advertised in Coin World this past week for $6800.
They said it was the only one. Wonder if Rick is aware of this.

    Thanks, everyone.

I had asked the seller for the ID # previously and he initially played dumb, telling me both that the coin was and was not in a holder! He also offerd to sell it to me for $800 and I told him it was worth more than that.

I was also informed by one of the bidders I'd contacted that the coin was previosly offered on Ebay by R&I - the image had looked familiar but I couldn't recall where I'd seen it.

Someone sent me a PM advising me on how to get the guy's address etc. I'm going to give it a try.

I just dropped him an eMail.

Just a simple sounding, non-threatening request. I'll bet he doesn't respond.

Oh, look- he just hooked a sucker!

Some doofus just bid $2,000 on the thing! image

(It'll be interesting to read what that doofus says when he retracts his bid...)

Are you choice2004455 on Yahoo or does the pict snatcher have it posted there too?
Here's the same coin on Yahoo:1858 Proof
Must be the same guy, url where he keeps his pictures: http://i8.ac.yahoo.com/users/3/2/6/4/choice2004455-img600x311-10339574731858_seated_dime_pcgs_pr65_cameo_rare.jpg

Edited - Dog, it never was our coin. He is using someone else's image. I don't know who the Yahoo seller is.
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
IF it's the same guy, he has quite a bit of high end material currently listed on Yahoo, yet his feedback indicates that all his previous sales have been very low dollar. Looks like the typical well-planned scam. Build a little confidence with some cheap sales, than go for the gold and run.

  • How does he think he is going to get away with selling the same coin on two auctions? And you're right; the photo on both is linked to the same addy.

Has anyone contacted the Yahoo seller?
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    CD,

That's a good idea. Somebody who's a member at Yahoo should pose the question in the Q&A section of the auction. If it is not the same seller, that would alert him that somebody stole his pic. If it is the same seller, it would alert him that people are on to him.

How can you know for sure it's the same person on yahoo as ebay?

I could link to that picture on yahoo if I wanted.

  • You're right; it may not be the same seller, but it is the same coin. The same coin can't be sold in two places! Are both these sellers dishonest by using someone else's photo? Or is one legit? Which one?

  • PlacidPlacid Posts: 11,299 ✭✭✭
Have to try to match up e-mail or other info from both to find out if they are the same individual.
For all I know the yahoo seller stole the picture from someplace else and the ebay seller linked to it.
Coin Guy didn't post the e-mail address that the eBay seller sent the threat from and I don't have a yahoo account so I can't help.

Check the Yahoo auction start date. Betcha it's within an hour or so of the eBay auction.
  • The descriptions are exactly the same, as well.
  • LokiLoki Posts: 897 ✭✭
Woops, never mind. Yahoo's auction started a day or so before. Oh well, that won't fly in court.
  • mbbikermbbiker Posts: 2,873
Wow, the yahoo seller has alot of High Dollar stuff for sale

Coinguy, I forwarded you the contact info via email. Keep my name under your hat if you can, as I could get eBay spanked for doin' that.

I don't mind helpin' protect some unsuspecting bidders from a scam, but I would like to avoid getting in hot water with eBay or whoever. It might only be a slap on the wrist I'd get from eBay, or if I win the auction before I can retract, I risk sullying my feedback with a neg, but that probably isn't that big an issue and I think it's worth the risk.

Note that I did NOT publish that person's info here, as that would definitely get me in hot water, and probably NARU'ed by eBay. I only forwarded the automated email I got on to coinguy, and no one else. I will probably call this guy's listed toll free number in the morning to see who I get on the other end.

Ebay should have something like a "red flag" indicator that would show up on listings. If someone with credible feedback sees something suspicious, they could issue a "red flag" to the listing that links to a comment by the issuer. That would be a neat idea imo and would greatly reduce the sometimes successful scams of these suspect listings.

    Another good catch, coinguy! Wow~!

Uhoh, could this be another scam listing?? This looks verrry suspicious to me.
I don't think I would buy oceanfront property in South Dakota from this guy, would you?

Here is the Ebay guy's email address: barrickks@yahoo.com If anyone can use that and the information posted here tonight to contact somone through Yahoo, that would be great.

I have emailed R&I (whose coin it supposedly was and/or is) to let him know, just in case he is the legit seller on Yahoo.

I take no credit for getting the auction pulled - heck, I'm not even sure what was done to accomplish that. But, I like the result image And, I'd like to thank and commend everyone (including those who sent PM's to me) for their help and wonderful teamwork. Thanks again.

    Loki,

That does look supicious. That seller also joined eBay the same day as the first, and is also linking to Yahoo.

    Yep. Pretty incredible group!
  • Back to the second odd one that Loki posted....just like the first one, the counter doesn't change...what's up with that? And also, there is no mention of shipping/terms/etc, just like the first one. The picture is linked to a name of a seller on Yahoo.

I just filed a "Neighboor Watch" complaint against this seller, stating completely all we know, and will see if Yahoo! takes any action.

Compare the style of images in the auction linked by Loki to the auction linked by Lucy in this thread. Both NTC, both originally larger photos of more than one coin cropped down to one, both obverse photos cropped to show entire slab, both reverse photos cropped to just the coin. It looks like Loki's linked auction picture was originally a centsles photo.

I have been in touch with R&I coins and the 1858 PCGS PR65 dime currently on Yahoo (which has the same image as the one posted by the scam artist on Ebay) is NOT being sold by R&I.

Therefore, it appears highly likley that either the same guy who listed it on Ebay is listing it on Yahoo or that some other scam artist is involved. I do not have any familiarity with Yahoo rules, regulations, contacts, etc, in such cases. If any of you do, please go for it and help stop this guy!
