I thought the 1903 O was supposed to be a weak struck coin.

  • She is characteristicly flat in the hair above the brow, but pretty nice for ms62. I expected a bit more chatter.

Definitely a nice tone to her. I have a similar tone on one of my morgans. I think it was the 1887S one, but can't remember.

I like that kind of toning also.

  • Hey Tracker I was checking out your website (Pretty Impresive thanks for sharing) and by the side by side comparison where would you grade the 1903 O in the auction.
Edited to say I think it's pretty clean to be 62
  • That coin is a classic example of how hard it is to grade from a photo. MS62???
  • Is that price reflective of the grade?

No the price is reflective of a higher grade, which it probably is. The only thing I can think of is the lack of luster, it certainly has a good strike for an 03 O. Did anyone click on the picture and look at the mint mark? What the heck is going on with that?
  • the reverse feathers are quite nice, the upper hair is indeed a bit flat but MS62?? Looks much higher to me.

If you're into toned Morgans, someone should dig up the old thread where Art R showed images of his coins. Gemtone also has a few really nice ones. I have an 1883 CC in 5 which has gold periperal toning similar to this one, but a little bit lighter.

Re Morgans, I have an 1884 CC in 6 which is bright white but has a cobalt sash on the reverse at 1:00 providing great contrast. My MS Liberty Nickel, Seated $ & Seated & Capped Bust Dimes all are attractively toned.

IMO they just have more 'personality' than their blast white counterparts.

I don't believe the type of toning on this piece would command a significant, if any, premium in ther marketplace. This is the case for monotone brown toning, which this piece appears to have. If the same toning pattern and location was replaced by, say, blue toning, then the color alone could increase the value of this coin by 50%. If that blue toning was really vibrant, the value could be enhanced by 100%. If that vibrant blue toning extended to twice as much area, we're talking about a 200% increase. Now add some vibrant reds, greens, and yellows, and we're up to 400% increase. If we finally extend the toning area throughout most of the coin, we're approaching "monster" status: name your own price!

Yeah I like a little periph tone too. I can't see why it's 62 unless that's a staple scratch over the eye.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
