Wow, that is a very nice comm. It's a tough one in high condition like that. A combination of low relief and poor strike made for a lot of really lousy looking examples out there. Very nice.

    Michael:

Nice coin. By the way, when you say "thick skin," I believe I have an inutuitve feel for what you are driving at, but you can perhaps give a bit more details about what this phrase means to you?

Thanks--I appreciate the opportunity to learn!

    Hi Michael,

Your coin is definitely better than mine, which is a PCGS MS-64. Congratulations! You probably own one of the best Sequicentennial haves on the planet.

Still, these things come down to an allocation of funds. The "bid" price for an MS-64 Sesqui is $465. In MS-65 it's $4,560. I paid about 10% over bid for my piece. Still I think I'd sooner have the $4,000 in some other coins than a better Sesquicentennial.

    Here's mine for a comparison.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

If it wasn't for commemoratives, who would use terms like sesquicentennial and quincentennial? image

WOW! That is a nice one. The sesqui is the ultimate in grade rarity in the early commems. An extremely weak coin not often found well struck even in EDS. Dies were of very shallow relief. They also tended to tone a real dull and ugly gray or mottled gold.

Nice looking coin, very nice. I prefer the older Comms to the modern ones.

hi there and thanks for all the great comments!

hi there billjones well i tend to agree with you and that 64 is super nice the bid really jumps from the 64 to 65 but the owner of the coillection
this coin is in saw this coin in 65 and couldnot resist as it is a super nice sesqui bordering on 66 and with a look that the collector who owns this cloin has never seen on a 65 sesqui or any sesqui so it was a no brainer buy coin
the coin is like an easy 66 for overall look and eye appeal and a full strike like99% on the reverse which you nefver see on the liberty bell also really a 66 butm since there are so few graded in 66 and the price jupms hugely the grading sewrvices are hesitant to put any sesqui in a 66 holder

now mark what im mean by a thick crusty skin so to speak is the coin has never been dipped and you see an uneven surface and the lustre going across the coin is not even dipped and also the toning is golden around the edges with the more often than not
lilac medium lilac not seen in the photo where the coin toned and was never dipped it has that crusty thick look to it very satiny and off white color of a never dipped coin hard for me to explain i guess you need to see this coin in person

also on the obverse some toning and darker areas on the coin also in the recessed areas t5he deeper color and that match wes thew open aREAS OF THE COIN

    sincerely michael
