What a terrible thing to do.

I found this 1889CC morgan in my grandfathers collection. Is this intentional damage or did a chunk fall out of the eagles throat because of metal issues? I know that it was not done while the coin was in our possession 50+ years.

That's the rare "blind eagle" variety image

Well it is well worn so someone could have gouged it on purpose when it was in circulation.

That's an example of the "wounded eagle" die break (it probably was stored too close to a 2000-P Sac and it spread).

  • Actually it was in one of those display books made for dollar coins since we had it.
  • Do you think it would get slabbed or bagged?

The question is, is it actually damaged (most likely the case- and if so, yes, it would bodybag), or was it struck through a foreign object on the die (not so likely, but possible- I can't tell from the picture). As a strikethrough error, it might be worth a tiny premium to someone who finds such things interesting.

But it is probably a damaged coin and not a strikethrough. If it is damaged, it's hard to say if that damage was accidental or deliberate. I personally wouldn't try to slab it- if the coin has been in your family 50+ years, its sentimental value would probably exceeed its monetary value. And "sentimental" coins are nice to hold in the hand without any plastic in the way.

I would go with anacs but would only get it slabbed if you plan to sell it since the price on those is pretty spread out even at low grades.

Anacs will net grade this coin. PCGS will grade this coin. The 1889CC is an important date which will allow encapsulation and the grade is low enough to allow such blemisheds to pass.

    ANACS Net Grade. PCGS Bodybag.

I agree with Mr. Kiefer. Despite the lower grade, that hit (or whatever it is) on the eagle's head is too severe to expect PCGS to grade it. I believe PCGS or NGC would bodybag it, and ANACS would net-grade it for sure. Even SEGS would note that as a problem.

(PCI or ACG, who knows, and who cares?)

I say keep it in its raw state as a nice "heirloom" coin and save yourself the submission fees and hassles. It's not an ugly coin, and the "blind eagle" is rather interesting, in a way... image

(Edited to add that I don't have a whole lot of PCGS submission experience, though, and while I respectfully disagree with truthteller on this one, he is known for truthtelling and may be correct.)

    PCGS will grade it.
Look, from what I've experienced, if the abrassion or nick is old and there is circulation over it (smoothing it out, like on this CC Morgan) then PCGS is more lax and forgiving, if you will.
Now, if it happened yesterday and was shiny from being freshly 'hit' then probably not.

I can't say for sure it wouldn't NG because it's close to "damage" it's still a cool coin and it could be die damage because the dies did smash together without a planchet between them. See the clash under the eagles left wing by the wreath?
    A cool CC. image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • If it is die damage what do you think this cc would be worth?
I may be offering it for sale when it comes back.
I sent it to anacs. I would rather get a net grade then the bag.
(man I hate that $35 bodybag)

The last one I sold was an AG3 that ANACS redtagged at F2 scratched. I got $55 on Teletrade but that was weird since I paid $100 for it from a mail order cull dealer.

My personal opinion is that this coin would be bodybagged for being cleaned once in it's life. The gouge on the eagle's head would be secondary, if it slipped by for not being cleaned.
