Do you get tired of getting slabs from dealers?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
That always have the stickers and dealer codes, sticky glue etc.
I know a little wd40 gets the residue off and such. I just don't know why they can't take a minute and do it themselves.image

How do folks feel about using cleaners, and chemicals to remove scratches or just to clean slab? Ever worry about it might find it's way to coin.

I remember before slabs came out dealers always had to write on the 2 by 2 cardboard holders also.

Well, if I ever sell coins none of these things will come with the coin.

    Prezado Senhor,

They do this to inventory the coin & attach a price code re what they paid for it / at what price they want to sell it, etc. Usually it's just tape & it comes right off.

I sell slabs with stickers on them. I don't know why I do it, I guess because they were on it when I got it and I never took them off.

What really stinks is when there was a sticker on the back of one of the old NGC holders, and someone peeled it off. Half the hologram label usually comes off with it, in those situations. image

I agree. A small, unobtrusive sticker is OK, but when you gotta go through a major effort to remove the adhesive, it's annoying. I use rubbing alcohol.

I use some citrus stuff called Goo Gone. It is awesome and I have never found a sticky substance it can't remove. I got an NGC Buff Nickel this weekend that had a very old sticker. The glue had turned into some kind of mummified, rock hard calcified substance. I left a couple drops of Goo Gone on it for about 2 minutes and it wiped right off. Awesome stuff, and as long as you don't drip it into a seam, you're fine. For 95% of the cases, I just put a few drops on a paper towel and all the sticky stuff wipes off with a few rubs.

Gives me a thought....buy the slabbed coins and have the dealer bust the coin out before I buy it. Removes the danger of my having to do it.

I just got a PCGS slab from DLRC- entire back half of the label (reverse side, in other words) had an inventory sticker with price, ID number, barcode, dolphin, etc.

Heritage Internet Auction slabs will usually have inventory # stickers. But I got one not long ago that had seller first and last name and minimum bid. I figured they goofed and left that on there.

The easiest way to remove the sticky junk from labels that some folks use on slabs is to use something called hexane or petroleum ether or ligroine. It works real slick, is volatile and leaves no residue. Course if yer not a chemist AKA coindoctorer yu mite have a hard time getting it. Otherwise rubbing alcohol or everclear works too. Whatever the case those little tags are a pain in the butt.

    stman,
If you are tired of receiving these slabs with dealer stickers, send them my way. I will provide in exchange a slab of the same denomination, with no sticker! Can't beat that with a stick!

  • I leave them on there because I have a return policy, and if it gets returned I need to still know how much I paid for it.

I posted a positive for DHRC one time that said something like "Nice coin, but please use stickers that I can peel off." His seem to be the worst.

    Hello,

Have any of you noticed that several ebay dealers cover the registry number on PCGS slabs. Why? I'm not sure I want to know, but give me your opinion.

Usually to prevent cert number hijacking for bogus registry entries.

  • I hate that too, and all my coins are shipped residue-free. image

I second the Goo Gone recommendation. With care, you can even remove stickers stuck on the delicate NGC holograms.

Note that Goo Gone is not the same as Goof-Off (which will eat up your slab and leave a hazy mess).

    This is what you want:
