Premium for nice toning?

What is a reasonable premium to pay for an attractively toned coin? I’m sure it varies from series to series, but can anyone give some examples? Does anyone think that toned coins are commanding too high a price, as toning seems to be in vogue at the moment?

  • Oh boy, Dan.... with three simple lines you ask questions that have taken many long, well-thought out, informed threads to answer. What I will say simply, because I am in a time crunch, is if someone can link Dan to the thread that I believe was started by TomB, where he in detail talks about this, you would be doing a good service. For that matter, I would like to read through that thread again myself. Anyone know which one I am refering to?

I'm waiting to snipe one that might have a value of $50, and I'm starting to think that I'll go as high as $200 because of the color. Then I realize how stupid this is. Then I look at the coin and again and I'm back to $200.00.

I just paid probably $75 more for a coin then its grade is worth because of color. But at least I have upgrade potential on that one.

It's killing me. What to do, what to do! Color has a crazy effect on me.

  • Post a link -- somebody else (probably me, if it's an Ike) -- will bid $201 for it and relieve your misery. image

Just kiddin' but I don't think you're as crazy as I am though about it. Please tell me why I shouldn't buy it.

  • Ah, that one -- in that case, go ahead and put that $200 bid in, there's little worry of brining it home at that price. Does that make the pain better or worse? image

A toned 1986 ICG MS65 ASE went for over $600 last year on eBay... I have a toned one at NGC now image (because PCGS couldn't grade it correctly)

I was the underbidding on that ASE. It is beautiful, just- in my case- not $500.00 worth of beautiful.
