ANACS - Tough Grading Results! - Free Giveaway Coming!

Everybody says PCGS is tougher then NGC and NGC is tougher then ANACS. Well I gotta say ANACS is tough on proof moderns. I submitted 20 Ike proofs mostly toned silvers and boy did I get a surprise. Not a single 69. Several 68 Hvy Cams, a couple of 67 Hvy Cams and various PF Cams and just PFs. I know at least 3 of these would have crossed @ NGC at 69 UCAM and possibly 1-2 @ PCGS at 69 DCAM.

I also submitted a 1978 Proof Washngton Quarter Reverse Die-Crack that came back PF68 HVY Cameo and a 1973 Ike DDR that came back PF 66 Cameo.

Maybe KINCOIN will give me a bazillion dollars for the die crack quarter?

Maybe I'll do a free giveaway with the PF Ikes I got back. They have nice bullseye toning.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Michael

Sorry about your misfortune, but is it possible that the toning could be viewed as hiding a hairline or two? Could you post a scan or two?

The problem with ANACS graing modern proofs is that they use the microscope too much in grading. PCGS/NGC just used their eyes.

I bet PCGS would give higher grades to some of those coins. Not only for the reason above, but PCGS seems to have loosened up on the high grades for modern proofs.

ANACS can be a lot tougher that some people think. They have the reputation of being easy graders because that's where some dealers send their coins with minor problems to get them into a recognizied slab. On the other hand ANACS really doesn't like to give out the "high honor" grades like MS or PR-69, perhaps because they are afraid of overgrading claims being lodged against them somewhere down the line.

You can also find some pretty attractive coins in ANACS holders. Here's an 1897 Barber half dollar I purchased for stock a few days ago. It's an ANACS MS-61, and it could be yours for $395.00 plus postage.

i have a ton of proofs in ANACS holders and i don't think they're loosely graded at all. from what i can see, they're pretty tough.

  • I agree that ANACS is strict. I tried crossing three ANACS graded coins to PCGS. One didn’t cross, one crossed at the same grade, and one was graded one point higher at MS62. That tells me that they’re pretty comparable to PCGS.

Long Beach rumor 9/02 - ANACS has gotten tough lately so they can continue to claim strong prices realized at auction (ie: they're undergraded). Some dealers were looking for recently graded ANACS coins for that reason. The recent prices realized makes this plausable.

Just like all rumors, don't know exactly where the truth lies...

Alright I'm going to give away 3 Ikes PF68s with toning in ANACs holders. I just don't know what kinda of contest to do. I have to think about it and post it in the next few days! I will post it here and on the Giveaway Board. Should I do 3 different giveaways or 1 with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place?

    Any thoughts?

  • How about 3 different give aways with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place? image

I have sent coins to ANACS for grading before and felt they graded the coins very fairly. I have another batch I will be sending to them later this year.

  • Nice gesture! Three different giveaways or one with a 1'st, 2'nd and 3'rd are six of one and half a dozen of the other to me image

I had three Morgans that were not accurately graded by ANACS. But I learned from these forums to look at the coin rather than the holder. I kept one of the ANACS Morgans I bought!

I am very pleased with my recent IHC acquisitions in ANACS slabs and have seen many coins recently graded at the local coin show I attend every month, again this Saturdayimage and I have no arguement with the grades, they seem right on.
  • If I ever try the crack out game, 2 of my top 5 candidates are currently in ANACS slabs. They look like definite undergrades to me.

I quit using ANACS for gold coins because they are too hard on them. I think ANACS has become one of the toughest grading services. mike

    Frattlaw:
For some reason, ANACS is horrid with Proof Ikes, I use PCGS and NGC for CAM/DCAM Ikes.

I wasn't really trying for registry coins since most of the coins are toned. I just wanted to try to see how ANACS grades.
I'm not displeased with my grades, matter of fact I'm just surprised. A couple of coins I'm going to giveaway, some I'll trade if anyone is interested, if not sell on Ebay and a couple I will keep.

I'll keep using ANACS, I like their grading standards. I like their holder and they're running a special until 11/4 9-Dollars, 9 Days, $9 per coin. Can't beat it. I sending them a toned 21 peace, a toned 89 morgan, a toned 81 Type II SBA a well as a couple of other various coins I have.

This just makes me look at ANACS even closer for cross-over possibilities.

  • From what i've heard ANACS really is a tough grading co. even if they arn't priced like the top two. Ike's i'd be interested in them, don't have any anacs ikes yet.
  • You could give a coin away to each of the forum members who didn't post in the Park Avenue thread! But then I guess you'd still have one coin to give away. image

I've always believed that you can find some really nice coins in ANACS holders sometimes for half the price of the same grade PCGS or NGC coin. This is where the phrase "buy the coin, not the holder" really rings true.
