Hello I'm a new person with a couple questions for anyone willing to answer. First, am I correct in assuming this order of desirability, for my main interest Morgan Dollars, would be Proof, DMPL, PL and MS. Would a lower population PL be more desirable than a higher population DMPL? Also can anyone give me some info on the Naples II collection? Thank you for your time.

Someone help this guy (gal?) with the question!!
Second of all, as for your question on the coins, you can't really make a generalization like that - you need to see the coins in question and decide what's more appealing to you - what can you afford, etc. You'll find that aesthetics is big on this board.
As for Naples II - I think it's in Florida - Naples I is i Italy

I don't think you can make a blanket statement that DMPL is better than PL and PL is better than MS. The DMPL and PL coins tend to show surface marks more because of the reflectivity of the surfaces. That's not necessarily bad, but it bothers some people and not others. A MS63DMPL may not look very attractive even though it is DMPL. And I wouldn't assume population = desirability. As FC57coins said, you have to look at each coin on its own merits.
The Naples II collection was handled by Legend Numismatics (Laura from Legend is a board member here under the name "Legend"). According to their web site "NAPLES II SET OF MORGAN DOLLARS: We acquired this PCGS graded set intact for just under $1,000,000. It is unique in the fact that over 75% of the coins were GEM DMPL's."
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Welcome, nice to have a new member.
I'll leave the qiuestion to the experts.

Thank you for your response. I have been collecting for about a year and a half. Started with my daughter and the state quarters, and evolved into Morgan dollars after reading a book about the Comstock lode. I am sort of a history freak. I remember sweating when I paid $48.00 for my first "DOLLAR". Now we are collecting Carson City Morgans. I am now on oxygen and I.V. feedings. (Just kidding)
They are my main interest, although we do like the old gold pieces, but we only have a few.

Generally speaking, with the exception of the Proof, you have the order correct IF you are speaking strictly about the order in which a coin SHOULD exhibit the most eye appealing features. This order is indicative of which coins were struck first MOST OF THE TIME. Some PL are the result of the die being repolished, so, again DMPL, PL and then brilliant. I leave out Proofs because we are talking about a different striking process; MS (mint state = circulation strike) and DMPL, PL and brilliant are all MS characteristics.
Now of course budget, availability and how they appeal to you are equally significant factors.
If you intend to collect Morgan dollars, you should probably invest some time in learning their history; such things as how they are struck, date by date characteristics, availability, etc. The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, by Van Allen and Mallis is the book I would recommend. There is another book, The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook, by Wayne Miller (out of print) is another, but I favor the first. Should you desire to indulge in varieties, there are at least 5 other publications dedicated to specific varieties. This website Vamlink is a informative site and speaks to and advertises some of the variety books; they may not have the lowest price. That is something you can further research should you desire to pursue variety.
This is just a start, so enjoy, ask away and I will post what I can, when I can.
One of the resident VAMers (Morgan dollar variety numismatist). Why "numismatist"? I don't just collect them, I study them.
