Trying the submission/Crackout Game

Well,

I just finished preparing my second batch to submit to PCGS. I got 2 of 4 graded last time, and am hoping to do better this time. I am submitting the following coins:

1831 Bust Half-cracked out of PCI slab as Au58. Hoping it goes 55-58
1919-s Standing Liberty 25 Cents. Bought as Au58. Think it should be 58
1853 Large Cent. Was bodybagged for cleaning last time. I personally don't see it so re-submitting. Au58
1859-O Seated Half Dollar. Cracked out of ANACS as Au58. Should be Au58

I am not trying to upgrade the cracked coins, but just want to get in PCGS holders. I will let you all know what happens with this group. It is always exciting to go through the process and get the grades. I really enjoy it much more than buying them slabbed.

  • Jay; I'm a relative newcomer to coin collecting and the plan you're working on is exactly what I'm working toward. I'm now at the stage of learning how to grade...and I'm not doing well.I recently submitted some coins to PCI ( I'm too intimidated by PCGS at this point!) that I bought raw and determined that they were undergraded. Waiting for them to come back is part of the fun. Wish me luck! Twowood
  • Good luck- though the money your spending could be put towards other coins.

  • beelzebud, I take it you dont incapsulate your coins (leave raw)! Im sure glad everyone doesnt feel that way, this board wouldnt exist!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
  • I had good luck crossing many ANACS coins. Some even graded higher. My NGC coins didn't fare too well! And we'll not talk about ACCUGRADEimage!
  • By the way, Good luck Wisconsin!

  • I am still using my free submissions from my membership, so that is why I am trying the large cent again. I am just trying to further my knowledge. If it comes back cleaned agian, I guess I will have to believe it. Then it will be time to go to some coin shows to have someone tell my why and what I am looking for.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I did exactly as you with my first few submissions. I also got the expected comments such as above.

  • I agree with Russ' comments. We all talk about grading skills and buying the coin but your grading skills are going to come up against someone else's opinion at some point (raw or slabbed). Buying coins and then attempting to cross or upgrade is just an exercise in comparative grading skills. Your approach makes sense to me.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • Wallstreetman:

I have both raw and slabbed coins. I just feel if its already slabbed, and you are confident in its grade (or believe its better) and have no intention to sell, why waste the money? You could buy more coins.
    JMHO- to each their own.

  • BTW, I believe the old adage goes:

"Buy the coin, not the slab"

    Jay,

Every once in awhile, the "crackout / resubmit in holder" thread surfaces, and opinions are all over the map.

Some are convinced that it is impossible to get an "in slab resubmission upgrade," while others here have done this. Likewise, others will insist that you must crack out a coin from a non-PCGS holder to cross it at the same grade to PCGS, while others will tell you that they have sent in ANACS or NGC coins to PCGS in their original holders and crossed them at the same grade.

For the most part, I believe it depends on the particular coins at issue. To a lesser extent, I believe it also depends on who is grading the coins and what kind of day he is having.

The above being said, I do know that if you submit a PCGS coin in its original holder, one of the three grades it gets assigned is its original grade. So, to get an upgrade, you'd need the remaining two opinions that it is of the higher grade.

Please let us know what happens; you are using an intelligent, no risk approach to this matter.

  • beelzebud, I would agree if it was already in a PCGS slab!

  • Partial to PCGS eh?
