I was wondering if their are any HTT collecotrs out there. I only have one, but am looking to expand my horizons. I would love to purchase an AU/UNC example of L18,HT32. I love that turtle with the box on his back!

I like them greatly and have been collecting them for a good number of years.
I have about 30 pieces so far most are in the XF range.
My best piece is a red uncirculated with Jackson emerging from a chest (the sub treasury) with sword in hand and a bag of loot in the other.

I also am into Civil War tokens both patriotic and NY storecards.
Anytime I can be of help just PM me.

Would either of you have any info on this Civil War Token Link to Pic? Additionally, what texts do you have on the subject?

Great area to collect. Lots of really neat items. If your into history, it's fun to look into the background of each token. So much to learn.

Anyone recommend any good books on these kind of tokens? They are really an interesting subject matter to explore.
  • I don't know much about hard times tokens, but if the Dow doen't pick up we may be seeing them back in circulation. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • The Redbook recommends reading the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 by Russell Rulau.

  • I've got that book...lot's of good info...but sure is confusing...lots of different manfacturers, die combinations, metals, etc. I've 30 or so civil war and store (card) tokens. Got them rather cheap, in xf, finding them in the book and cataloging them has been very time consuming. Real interesting though.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...

Easiest thing to do is go to search "hard times tokens" you will find much information there and nice pictures of most of the hard times tokens with their Low numbers listed it is a great site. Also dealers in tokens and HT token books for sale.

Also search "civil war tokens" if interested for much information on these.

I collect the Hard Times Tokens with political messages on them. I have a some of the rare ones like Low 1 and Low 7. I have written a number of articles on the subject and will try to answer questions as best I can.

I also buy and sell Hard Times tokens mostly on a want list basis. If you want it, and if there are more than 2 or 3 known, chances are I'll get it for you eventually. I also deal in Civil War tokens and I collect 19th century presidental campaign medelets. I grade tokens far more conservatively than ANACS and NGC.

    Books -

Hard Times Tokens by Rulau - There is now a 7th edition. Older editions, except #1 which was not very good, are OK for informational purposes at cheap prices. Also there is a price guide in the back of recent Red Books.

Civil War Tokens - The two classic works by the George and Melvin Fuld are still the latest. "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" and "Civil War Store Cards."

The Ciivl War Token Collectors Guide by Bryon Kanzinger is also great for the intermediate to advanced collector, but you need to buy the Fuld books first to make it worthwhile. The prices in it are also getting dated very quickly.

The United States Token book by Rulau is quite good for all 19th century tokens except the Civil War section, which is quite poor IMO.
