Free Airfare to PCGS Showdown at FUN !!!!!!!

DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,008 ✭✭✭✭✭
Because my message became the whisper in a hurricane on the original thread, I decided to start a new thread.

At the suggestion of Cosmicdebris, I thought it would be a good idea to prove that this forum shares value in all forms. I have a ton of extra frequent flier miles . . . enough to probably fill a plane, so I make the following offer, as soon as BJ confirms that there will be a showdown at FUN.

1. I will set up a thread where people can nominate a forum member who they think should go to the show, and tell the reason why.

2. All nominees must be members of the forum as of today's date, 10-10-02.

3. At a date certain and after reading all of the nominations, everyone interested can e-mail me their vote for who goes to the next showdown. At the end of a 48 hour mailing period, I will tabulate the votes.

The winner gets coach class airfare from anywhere in the continental US to the show . . .

. . . AND IT'S ON ME. I have so many frequent flyer miles I'll never be able to use them all in free airfare. After attending the show in LB, I think everyone should have the opportunity to see what the Registry brought together. As a side bar, if the winner is a YN, then I will ADD a second ticket so that a chaperone can accompany them.

If you think this is a good idea, and/or have suggestions, please post them.

Doug

Ken and all, thanks for the support. I really don't feel that I'm doing anything dramatic because I'll be getting the ticket/s with FF miles. Nothing out of pocket to me. Let me tell you the main reason I wanted to do this is because when I looked at 180+ of the finest Indian Head Cents in the world, I believed that I would never see that many in one sitting ever again. . . and I don't even collect IHC's!!! If it had been one of my favorite series, you couldn't have pried me off the table. Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the same thing. Forget about the money, owners, PCGS's marketing department, etc. The coins were unbelievable, and something I will never forget.

Now if there is a member of the board who contributes, but may not have the freedom of means to go, I want to contribute back to the group.

Maybe I'm just feeling good after plugging that last hole in my Roosevelt 1946-present MS and PR collections with a pop 1/0 and a pop 6/0 . . . who knows! That is four Top 5 sets, with many MS68's and PR70DC's. It has really been a fun, fun set to put together without absolutely toasting my bank account. That is what coin collecting is all about. Of course I'll upgrade when I can, but I am proud of the set and the personal accomplishment. I have no regrets, and don't give one rat's rear end whether I ever get my money back out of them.

Stewart, thanks for the kind words. I had a great time talking with you and sharing a few Proof Lincolns back and forth.

Does this mean you want to win the free airline tickets ????????

  • Doug,

That is a wonderful offer.. Its a great chance for a new collector to go to a big coin show!!! Instead of
a local Mall show.... It would be like a little kid walking into toys r us....

I too wish to congradulate you on a very fine idea and gesture. As I said in my E-mail to you"A YN or someone stuck in the middle of nowhere would be a good canidate for your offer".As you pointed out"to see some of the finest coins in any series is something no one will forget anytime soon."I hope it can be worked out with PCGS.

A very kind thing to do! Kudos!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I nominate Merz! He didn't get to go to the Long Beach show.

I'm not eligible.I have been to big Coin Shows and have held finest known and pop 1 coins. Thanks for the thought. There are many on this board a lot more deserving than I.While I've never been to the FUN Show, and it would be nice to meet some of the other board members,I can't see myself as a nominee.

    Doug,

If this is where you want the votes to be made, I vote for Cameron. Being a YN and having most of his collector life ahead of him, I think it's only fitting.

What a wonderful and generous gesture you have made.

I was actually going to wait until BJ announced what the showdown was for the FUN show before the voting started. I was going to start it on a new thread.
