New Member - Draped Bust Half Dollars

NysotoNysoto Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hello everyone,

I have collected coins since I was six - mercury dimes from circulation. I have collected U.S. type, some early copper and some U.S. and foreign gold. The last five years bust halves, and now just draped bust heraldic eagle half dollars by die variety, I have always admired the design and have an interest in U.S. history during the formative years. Any other draped bust collectors out there? I recognize some as ebay bidders.

Oh yeah, I also have 1939 and 1950 DeSoto's, and collect obscure orphan auto hubcaps (I tend to like round metallic objects).

Check out Stack's auction of David Queller's half dollars - it is incredible.

Wisconsin - I would stay away from the 1807, there are far nicer coins at auction houses likes Stacks, Heritage, etc. Exceptional draped bust halves are seldom listed on ebay, but I have purchased some lower grade rare varieties there.

    Welcome!

Let me know if you come across any chopmarked draped bust halves-- I want to buy one! BTW, the oldest half with Chinese chopmarks is an 1808 capped bust.

    Welcome guy!

    Draped Bust Half Dollars

I think I need one for my type set or is it a heraldic type.
At least I know it's not the small eagle type unless I got 20g's laying around here somewhere.

question for shiro: are dollars & halves the only silver coins that ever got chop-marked? ie. any smaller denom's?

The smaller the denomination, the scarcer they are chopmarked. For years half dollars were the largest silver coins the US produced for circulation, so they served as bullion for trade with the Far East. San Francisco Seated Liberty half dollars aren't too rare chopmarked because they were the largest silver coins that branch mint produced until 1859 (and the 1859-S dollars were struck at the request of merchants who wanted to use them in trade with Asia).

Counterstamped draped bust halves that were used in the Caribbean are scarce, but I've never seen one with a Chinese chopmark. They're probably out there, though. If you could find a chopmarked draped bust quarter, dime, or half dime, you'd have a rare coin indeed.

    Another question for Shiro:

How can you tell when a coin was chopmarked? For instance, suppose I took a 1799 half dollar and chopmarked it today. I let the coin tone a bit (or perhaps I help it along with some AT). How can you tell that this coin wasn't legitimately chopmarked in the 18th century as opposed to actually being chopmarked in the 21st century?

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. to Nysoto: Sorry about this OT post in your first thread! Welcome to the boards--they are a lively and generally enjoyable place!
