$10 Indian Pocket Piece Guess the grade!!!

Just kidding about guessing the grade. Here is a $10 Indian that I assume was used as a pocket piece. Never seen one worn this much. I wonder if PCI would call it artificial wear like Braddick's Sacagawea $1.

Interesting thing about this coin is that it weighs 14.4 grams. A spanking new $10 Indian weighs 16.718 grams. Looking at the coin you'd think it weighs less.

That's cool. I don't know if it would even get a grade, do they hand them out with numbers less than 01?

I like it though, lots of character.

Wow. That IS cool. I've seen a $20 Lib in Fair. But it had more detail than that.

    Hey Lordmarcovan,
Did the $20 Lib have a date? I just assumed I couldn't get a grade on this coin since the date is gone.

I can't remember. I think maybe Bill Fivaz had it, maybe (?) (I didn't know who Bill Fivaz was then, so it might or might not have been him. He visited my dealer quite often, I understand).

It was somebody who was working on a "World's Worst Type Set", that much I remember. (Braddick's is not the first, just as my "Holey Coin Vest" was not an entirely original idea).

This would be about 12 years back. The guy, whoever he was, had a sense of humor- the "half cent" was a Lincoln that had been sheared in half! And the "Bar cent" had been run through some sort of machinery that gouged horizontal bars across it, LOL. I also remember a VG+ Isabella quarter, as I recall. I asked the fella about that- it was a not-bad looking piece, almost Fine, as I remember. He said, "Yeah, I really need to downgrade that one". image

PS- I sent Braddick a Peace dollar a while back that was pretty similar to your $10 Indian there. I think we were able to figure out the date was 1923 or 1928, as part of the last numeral in the date showed... barely. It was slicker than slick. He said that he couldn't get it graded 'cause it didn't have enough date.

  • Bill Fivaz is also working on a worlds worst type set. Braddick dosen't have to worry about competition because Fivaz's goal is different. Braddick wants smooth, honest wear coins that can be slabbed by PCGS. Fivaz has his set in corroded, cleaned, holed, worn etc. condition in a beat up album held together with duct tape (that is what he told me - I haven't seen it).

So it was Bill Fivaz I met, then. I've seen the set. It was ten or twelve years ago, and I might not have the details totally right. I don't remember duct tape on the album, but that would be a nice touch. image

I was just getting back into numismatics after a 7-year hiatus. (I pretty much set it aside from 1984-1991, during my college years and up until the beginning of my first marriage). I was meeting a numismatic celebrity and didn't even know it. image

This was at Mary Sellers' shop on Haywood Road on the west side of Asheville, NC. Bill Fivaz is also apparently friends with my old numismatic mentor, Bill Wright (William J. Wright, Asheville's biggest dealer).

That's pretty funny stuff. Maybe I'll hold this coin and if I ever see Fivaz I'll show it to him. I don't know the guy but maybe this will be an excuse to meet him. I saved this coin from the melting pot the other day so there must be a reason.

Have a friend of mine whose been working on a set of holed coins forever. All he needs is a chain cent and a 1796 Quarter and he's done. I sold him a small eagle Bust $1 a long, long time ago in VF for $250 with a hole in it.

I just started a Morgan Set that I want to be the lowest grade non-damaged set ever. Have about 12 coins so far. The cheapest one has been $4. Don't plan to grade it or anything like that. Just doing it for fun. I think my whole set might cost less than the cheapest morgan in the #1 Morgan Set.

That is resally cool. Makes you wonder how a coin can really get to that state.

Thanks Jay for those bid sheets.I got them in the mail today.
    Mucho Gracias Senior.

    Neat $10 piece too.
It looks like it has 10-20 years of circ wear.
Not long for a silver or clad coin, but gold wears 50X faster.
No way of telling the date I guess?

That is a great coin. Numish is correct though in "No Grade" from PCGS due to 'No Date' (or MM) seen.

My "Worse Known" set has a ten dollar Indian that is PCGS FA02. If there was even a ghost, or a hint of a date (and MM) that would be the worlds best PO01 Gold coin!

Thanks for showing it. It's always a pleasure looking at these circulated treasures.

Ha! I think "circulated" might be the understatement of the year! image
