Actually an ICG rather than a PCI - big difference in my opinion - so whats up with those scratches? are they on the coin or on the plastic holder? I haven't seen any CLEANED ICG but this looks like it could have been cleaned -> bodybag but if the scratches were someone trying to clean the plastic holder then it may come back PCGS 60/61/62?

My mind was saying ICG, but I wrote PCI. My mistake. If it was PCI, I wouldn't have posed the question. I think the "gash" above and on the R2 star is deep enough to possibly bag it. There's a good lick on the bonnet too. "Old cleaning" was my first impression, although I have not been overly concerned with cleaned coins in ICG holders.

The coin is just not what I think of when I picture a BU coin.

Although the 01-P often comes very unattractive in lower MS grades with an unnatural looking steel/grey lustre and plenty of abrasions, this piece (going from the pic) looks like a slider to me. Look at the coton bolls and edges of leaves and edges of stars on the obv. and the eagles talons and neck feathers on the reverse. Also looks more like light circulation/handling marks as opposed to bagmarks to me too. Like the 84-S, there are a lot of AU55 - AU58 pieces out there.

If it comes in AU then it looks too baggy for more than an AU53, imo, but it has some nice details for a 1901. It may be the image, but I think in my gut PCGS might bag it and call it something like N2 or N4. IF you decide to send it in, would you crack it or a submit it as a "cross at any grade"?

it looks like a low-end unc to me. can't imagine why someone would refuse to grade it.

AU-58 if there is slight wear, otherwise MS-60.
  • Way too scuffy, no eye appeal- might be a slider rather than an unc. I wouldnt touch it. JMHO.

I agree Bill. This is one of those coins IMHO that is either an AU50 or an MS60. This coin has NO eye appeal, and nothing to justify a mid AU grade, or anything better than a 60.

My idea of a 58 is a coin that would be a 63 if not for the light circulation. I can't make a jump between 58 and 60. I currently have an 01 in 58, which smokes alot of 60's, because the eye appeal is so great. It is unfortunate that it has the slightest of wear. I 58 should have the same or better eye appeal than a 63, but it just has slight friction on the highest of devices.

This is not an uncirculated coin. Look at the hair near the LIBERTY. Weak strike or no, this is an indication of wear.
