Bust Half Opinions Please- Better pictures

Hi all,

I am looking for a nice draped bust half in Au55-58 condition. This coins seems it may grade that, but what are your opinions on this dark color?? Is that a bad thing as far as price goes, or just a matter of personal preference. If you click on the coin in auction link, a nice large poto will appear. I think many of you will be able to tell more about the toning from this view.

As a general rule I stay away from pricey coins like this unless they're slabbed - but I should talk - look at my trade dollar thread - it's got some really good information on toned, AT and such coins. You're wise to post for opinions on here.

    Regards,

    Frank
  • Frank,

I did just read the trade dollar thread. I am hoping maybe someone will have some insight into this coin. I just like the challenge I guess of buying raw coins. When you hit them right you can get a good savings on them. When you miss it is a costly mistake, but I believe it all averages out, and makes us better collectors because of going through the process rather than buying the plastic holder.

I just bought a capped bust half in AU58 that'll knock your socks off!! Of course, I paid well over "pick your color" sheet but I felt it very worthy! I have been looking for a while for a decent looking bust half and I just couldn't find one that appealed to me for anywhere close to the sheet prices. So I dug deep to get what I wanted, and it's worth every penny because I don't plan on selling it. That baby's all mine!! image

How can you even know it's real?

With no disrespect intended, I wouldn't even look at anything costing over $100 if it wasn't slabbed by PCGS, NGC or ANACs. Sorry, I remember the "bad old days," and the collector got screwed almost every time.

In the overwhelming majority of these situations, an expensive raw coin is a problem coin that someone is trying to unload. Here's an example: in late 1998, I went to an auction and saw a raw 1920 P SLQ, listed as MS 65 FH.

I was looking for an SLQ so I checked the coin out. It was clearly Unc. and was problem-free enough to merit an MS 65 grade, but it was obviously cleaned. It went for around $300.

Quite frankly, I don't like it. And I love original toning.

If the image is representative, I think it's way too dark, too evenly toned. Hard to say without a closer look, but I think it's been re-toned.

    Just my opinion -

At $606, and the reserve not met, I don't believe you can determine enough detail in that scan to justify bidding higher. However, if you just have to have the coin, then verify the seller's return privilge and KEEP that e-mail!

Meet the latest addition to my "collective". She is a grand ol' madame. image
If his is an AU, mine has GOT to be MS! This one is graded AU58 and is encased in an older PCGS holder.

i wouldn't mind that toning one bit. i like it actually. i'd be more concerned about the amt. of wear. it seems to have too much wear for au, ceratinly not "choice au". bottom line is that the image is too smal. however, he is offering a solid return policy, so you could take a chance at buying it sight-seen.

    i'd say: go for it!

oh, and the 1814 is nice and the grade seems exactly right, "slider". however, i'd say its worth 25-50% above retail due to the gorgous wayte-raymond toning.

  • If you click on the image of coin in auction, you get a very large view of the coin. I think you may be able to tell more from this.

Wisconsin- The coin has au detail but it looks like it might have spent some time buried underground. Wait for a coin with luster you'll be much happier.

didn't realize that the digipic could be clicked for a larger image. NOW i say GET THAT COIN, if you don't, i will!!!

that is the way 200 Y O silver SHOULD look. i like it as far as what the image reveals. only sight-seen will you know for sure though.

I would like to see the edge on this coin. The edge where the denticles appear somewhat separated from the rim. Makes me curious. But I think it's OK. If it's original, looks quite nice.
  • You can download the images and lighten them with your imaging software to get a better look at the details. Details look to be consistent for a mid AU. The dark toning doesn't bother me, however, it may be hiding hairlines, scratches, and porosity.

Loki-That is a great looking 1814. Bust Halves with that kind of eye appeal will always be in demand and bring a premium.
I am no longer looking for an 1815/2
