Mr. Blay, Just because some of my sets are registered doesnt mean that all collectors feel comfortable with that..I'm very proud of my sets especially those rated at the top a showdown or just sharing those sets with others is fine with me many of these coins are pop 1 stand alone type coins...However, many collectors don't feel as I do they dont want to share..I applaud Laura for wanting to protect these clients and the wish's they have..afterall they are the clients coins.. Bruce Scher
How about a complete 1792-1964 type set? It would have tremendous variety, something for everyone. I currently have the 5th finest so I probably can't compete, but would love to see complete type set.
As far as I know Law doesn't exist, and there is no collection.
If you have it, show it. If you don't want to show it, why talk about it at all. If Law is so secret, why do we know about him at all.
My guess is that Law is just dying to go public Can't help putting out hints can he?
My guess is that Stewart's Barber Dime set wins manno et manno. After reading about his IHCs, I wouldn't bet against him anywhere. He is probably one of the top five premier collectors alive right now.
Laura, I for one say bring Law and his dimes out. If he dares
Not everyone can compete in these competitions nor can everyone make it to one of these competitions. How about if PCGS has a contest to have one or some of us attend the show on PCGS without actually being a competitor in a show down. I know I would love to meet some of you guys but could never make it to one of these shows otherwise.
Tell you what Cos, to prove that these forums are worthwhile, and much is shared among the bretheren here, I will do the following because I like your idea:
1. Set up a thread where people can nominate a forum member who they think should go to the show, and tell the reason why.
2. All nominees must be members of the forum as of today's date.
3. At a date certain and after reading all of the nominations, everyone interested can e-mail me their vote for who goes to the next showdown. At the end of a 48 hour mailing period, I will tabulate the votes.
The winner gets coach class airfare from anywhere in the continental US to the show . . .
. . . AND IT'S ON ME. I have so many frequent flyer miles I'll never be able to use them all in free airfare. After attending the show in LB, I think everyone should have the opportunity to see what the Registry brought together.
Would anyone care to hazard a small guess on what it would take to be considered one of the top five coin collectors active today??????? No offense intended, but they aren't on this forum!
Trade Dollar Nut - There is no way to determine who are the top five collectors today or yesterday.Did you not receive some sort of award for collecting from the set registry.People look up to you as a collector and what you have accomplished in your series
Doug That is a magnanimous gesture! I think it ought to be one of the young collectors.Or collectors that haven't ever been to a large Coin Show, because of their location.
Don, I have all of these points accrued and I just feel like I should do something with them. I'm all ears if anyone thinks it is a good idea. If it is a YN, then heck . . . I might just throw in another one for a parent to take them!
I think it would be a fanastic opportunity for someone to see a big show and showdown. When am I ever going to see 180+ of the finest indians again???? How about seeing 300 of the finest Morgans, Mercs, or Lincolns ?????
Stewart: I am proud of what I've accomplished in numismatics. And believe me when I say you haven't seen the half of it. YET!
But I'm also realistic enough to know what's out there. The set the Childs 1804 resides in is stupendous. The Knoxville type collection is amazing. There are others - enough to make me feel like a small fry. So don't I doubt for a second that my statement is correct. We (the denizons on this board) are nowhere remotely near the top five active numismatists - let alone the top five alive numismatists!
Legend Mafia??? That's a rather poor choice of words! Perhaps you'd care to explain?
You should know better. If you wish, you can win ALL the crowns for having the best registry sets. I know I've built great collections and have made MANY great freinds (gee where do all those cool coins go I buy if I didn't build these sets?). One of my big satisfaction's is that some else allowed me to use their money to create a fantasy set that I personally couldn't do.
You've got to accept the fact that Mr. Law and some of my other good customers buy coins to be "unstressed" from their day jobs. Yes, they LOVE their coins, and they WILL share them, but they don't want to enter into a contest. You have to learn, that for some people they love their coins so much, any kind of a knock (and I mean the slightest thing) will actually depress them. I respect their wishes.
As for my tag line of building as many top registry sets as anyone. You know I have. Just some people won't acknowledge it-because even though I bought all the coins, its their money and their pride and joy to name. Although I will admit there was one set I was so proud of I kinda badgered the owner to add Legend to it. Otherwise, I can live without the world knowing what sets I've built. Call me any name you want, claim I haven't built any great sets, I will NOT join the rat race anymore!
And yes, there really IS a LAW guy and he collects far more than just Dimes! And as far as these "phantom sets" If you think I'm fibbing, I'll be more than happy to create a list of the pop. 1-2 coins or finest knowns I paid record prices for this year at the auctions (the easiest to verify). They all went somewhere!
Don't be surprised if one day the LAW Dime set is delisted (when I get the time)! Me and Mr. Law will always know it exists.
And last, I like the Legend Mafia thing, thanks!

JUST SAY NO TO WANNABES! They lurk and prey on unwitting collectors in chatrooms!
I doubt you know who I am, which is just fine with me. I have an immense amount of respect for your numismatic knowledge and eye for quality. But, you are childish, immature, a brat!
It's been many a year since I've seen kids challenge someone to do something, and that ``come out of the closet'' expression is really offensive. Why don't you do somethng really constructive and gather around your other immature cohorts and pull 'em out and see who has the biggest!
One bit of advice: for a man of your years, it is behooves you to grow up really soon!
Are we fighting about who has the most money again ??
YES..it is all about money..
If we want a real competition that DOES NOT involve money..who wants to play tennis against me ? or baseball ?? basketball ? All my life I have been involved with real competitions where we all start off with an equal chance..in the game of coins,it is who has the most money.

What an generous suggestion DMWJR. I think that offer should be a subject of a different thread. It would be so cool to send someone who otherwise couldn't make it to the next showdown. I love that idea.
Trade Dollar Nut,Laura Belle and the East Village Prowler
This message board provides comic relief for me and you have all fallen for it.I am having a blast.
Trade Dollar Nut - We both know that the collector with finast set of Sacajawea dollars is not in the top five numismatists of all time. But if someone on the message believes that and respects that collector.Let It Be !!! What about the Real Estate mogul from Long Island ? the previous owner of a department store from the mid west ? The recluse who lives in Arizona ? Just smile a little more and try not to be so cynical
Laura Belle - I know as well as anyone how to get you going. We have been there and done that many times. And it is very easy to push your buttons. Of course you have assembled some of the finast registry sets and that is why I am picking on you.I am trying to get you to share some of the collections you have assembled with people who haven't a clue what you have done.Your life is numismatics and all you keep telling me is all your collections are private and you don't want to share
East Village Prowler - You are a nobody.A p--- ant.I just looked at your user profile and you tell me I'M immature.Which comic book did you read to find your name ?I can only guess what you collect.
Trade Dollar Nut - there is the Penny mafia so I thought I would christen the Legend Mafia. If Laura likes it, is it all right with you or do I stop using it?
I may be a nobody, but you are still immature. Grow up. Whatever you say about, true or not, does not change what you are. Oh, and your attitude is very poor.
Would love to see the Standing Liberty Quarter sets. The top 3 sets are complete and #1 & #2 sets (Ohio Collector & Navada Collection) have a weighted GPA above 67. They have got to be some amazing sets.

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
Sorry Greg, I am actually thinking about getting out of the type sets and selling alot of the coins (not all, some I just like to much). I think the SLQ series is calling to me. This one and my 1917 Type 1 66FH would be a good start.
Bill
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
That SLQ series is way too expensive and difficult to consider collecting. Much better to sell me the 1918 and get into something good like proof Sacs or ASEs or something like that. According to David Hall modern commems are hot, hot, hot. Just think how many of those you could get for that one small miserable quarter

No doubt a showdown between the Blay Barber dimes and the Law Barber dimes would be exciting - but it just isn't in the cards for FUN, 2003.
Keep the ideas coming for neat potential Showdowns.
