Large cent experts please explain "Randall hoard."

Please see the link below:

My questions:
1. What is the Randall Hoard?
2. Seller has a good rating but this can't possibly be the coin he is selling. Has anyone done business with ms67rick? The coin looks almost laquered....and cleaned.
3. As a Coronet Head Large cent buyer what should I be looking for? Any dealers specialize in this area?

Thanks!

DesertLizard - I don't know all of the details of the Randall hoard but I believe it was a large group (in excess of 2000 pieces!) of Coronet Large Cents mostly dated between 1816 and 1820, found in a burried keg in the late 1860's. Many of those coins display varying degrees of red or red/brown color and not surprisingly, many have spotting. The hoard pieces repesent a good percentage of today's survivors.

I don't know the seller, but there are enough of these around so that I would recommend you play it safe and buy one certified by a major grading service.

<< <i>The story begins in 1868 when a merchant from Georgia discovered a keg of United States One Cent pieces. The merchant spent the Cents in payment of a debt. Eventually the Large Cents, most dated from 1816 to 1820 were bought by the William Chapman Company of New York at less than face value. It is reported that Chapman paid ninety cents per hundred coins!

After attempting various means of getting rid of the Coppers, Chapman was able to sell the remainder to a New York coin collector by the name of John Randall who patiently, over several years, sold the coins to other collectors. It is directly because of Randall's diligence that many wonderful Mint State Copper Cents are preserved for the Coin Collectors of today. >>

DesertLizard- that coin does look to be laquered or oiled. I think you could get a PCGS ms64 coin for that much money. Here's a picture of my PCGS MS64 red/brown. mike

Great Day, Darktone!! That's one super cent you have! Wow.

If the cent in Lizard's link is oiled or lacquered, can it be cleaned (acetone?) without harm? How much does the lacquer hurt the value? The coin does look way unnatural to me..

randall coins from 1818 & 1820 are unquestionably the best type coins for the coronet series. i own 5, 2 from 1818 & 3 from 1820, 4 out of ms-64 or better slabs. the fifth i bought at auction about 4 years ago, i grade it ms-66+, and only payed $1300 for it, an unbelievable steal. in ms-63, you can get these coins for $300 - $400, w/ plenty of red, and that has to be the greatest bargain in all of copper. i have probably owned 10 - 12 over the years.

imagine, a coin near 200 years old, in pristine uncirculated condition w/ most of the ORIGINAL red luster! for under $400 bucks!

what most people don't realize is that actually, most of the randall coins were corroded, it was the coins near the center & top of the hoard that were most pristine and in finest condition. i have never seen a true "Red" coin though.

regarding you oily ("slimy" is more like it), i'd pass on that coin.

Dorkkarl is right. They are relatively cheap & of this series, are the most available. I have a PCGS MS 65 BN with 20% RD & paid just under $700 for it two years ago.

Darktone - Your coin has great color & strike. Is it a 4 because of the contact mark between spots 6 & 7 & the spot below star 7 (don't see an image of the reverse)? Normally they'll allow one major spot on the periphery & one noticeable contact mark in a grade sensitive area re a 5.

the information already said is true, many of the high grade coins that you see today came from that hoard, i did see a small group of these around 50 or 60 pieces, about 25 years ago, they where really nice. as far as that coin you are showing, save your money and find something else. it looks wizzed buffed, recolored, oiled, and retoned.

I bought a 1820 PCGS MS-64BN from the June Long Beach show and I just love it. It was only $375.00 and is all there. No real red showing, but a very cool coin. As everyone has said, those are the coins to get. Very distinctive die crack around all the stars. Very readily available.

      • darktone,

SUper nice cent! That die crack is super! Almost makes me forget to look at the rest of the coin. Excellent color too!

I'll use that coin as my standard as i look around....for a slabbed one.

Here's is my Randall Hoard coin. It was in a NGC 64 RB slab, but with the dark spots, I think ANACS graded it more accurately.

        image

It is for sale if you want to make an offer. The price guide lists the coin at 630 in 63RB, but I will entertain any serious offer. Mark

That is the coolest die crack I have ever seen... that, not a pissing minute man, would get an extra buck from me...

I'm confused. Why was the Randell hoard brought up in relation to the linked auction? It is not a Randell hoard date and the hoard is not mentioned in the auction. And you can't compare the prices of Randell hoard coins to a MS 1826 cent. 1826 cents get real tough in grades better than VF while MS Randell's are common.
        • Good point.

Actually the seller has many large cents for sale and one of them referred to the Randall Hoard.

I did not like that particular one but did finding the linked one interesting.

I suspect he wets his coins before photographing them. They look sickeningly shiny!

I don't think you realize how rare the pissing minute man is. The mint inspects proofs before selling them, and a proof coin with an error will be worth a lot more. You should not pay extra for that cent, because the mint does not inspect them too hard for errors before putting them out.
