Opinions on safe

OK... I finally have some money set aside to get a nice safe. I have been looking at a few models, and right now I am leaning on this one... what is your opinion on it. How do you think it ranks regarding ease of getting into and fire-resistance?

    Hooked,

I like it! I have it's little brother. The way it's filling up, I wish I'd bought the one you're looking at.

Russ... I was looking at that 1.2cf safe too... but I figure if I am going to dish the money out for one, I should make it big enough to last for at least a few years.

Do the electronic locks make it easier to break into? Also... it says 3year/$50,000 warrenty... does that mean if something happens to it within the first three years, they will reinburse me up to 50k?

    Hooked,

I don't think electronic locks have any impact. Probably the same level of entry difficulty as the tumbler. Thing about the electronic lock that is better, though, is that it has four numbers instead of three, and you can change the combination. Can't on the tumbler.

The insurance is for loss due to fire, but only if that loss occurs within the rated time frame maximum.

  • I have this same safe.

A word to the wise - get plenty of silica gel canisters.

    This safe does retain moisture.

  • Hi :
My only problem with these smaller safes , is they can be carried off , or moved with a light dolly. If they're bolted down , could be removed with a crowbar. Maybe I'm just paranoid , but I like the larger gun safes. As long as you're not looking for a fancy paint job , etc. , they can be had for around $ 1.25 per pound of weight . Storage space is much greater , and the peace of mind is really worth it. Plus , you can store long guns in it !! image

Not mine unless the slimeball is strong enough to rip up the entire sub-flooring while he's at it. I didn't use the wimpy bolts that came with it, but instead used toggles that go all the way through and anchor underneath.image

EDIT: He'd also have to first find it. It's well disguised; you can walk by it all day long and not know what it is. Oh, and he'd have to do all that within 15 seconds before the alarm goes off - including a 115dB siren.image

I've had my eye on this one for while, since it would fit well into a closet I have. Comes with bolt-down hardware too. Throw a couple bags of pennies in the bottom, and it ain't going nowhere.

Dave... I actually looked at that one. The only problem is I wouldn't be able to fill it, and I would have to sell 1/3 of my collection to buy it. I figure a few years into the future I might persue such a safe. For now, what I am getting will suit me fine.

Also... how do they install those bigger safes if they are so heavy?

  • Get the largest safe you can afford - never seem to have enough room. Also I use Goldernrod dehumidifier rod along with silica gel to eliminate moisture.

  • I have a nice safe - old but nice. ABout 2.0 cubic feet as well. Not nearly enough room.

Take this advice - figure out the size you think you need, and then go up a size. You can be assured you will run out of room much faster than you thought. A little extra dough now solves lots of problems later.

  • Tristarz ; That was kinda my thought with the larger gun safe. It's amazing how much stuff you can find to stick in a safe that should be locked up. It's usually cheaper to buy the big one first , instead of running out of room and having to upgrade later.
Hookedoncoins : When you buy a large gunsafe , locally , it will usually include delivery and set-up . Those guys have the equipment to deliver and put the safe where you want it. Just be sure of the location , because you won't be moving it by yourself later !!

my slimeball would have to walk in and try to walk out with my coin boxes without tripping over all the clothes on the floor. the dog might be licking him too.

I recall reading that fire-resistant safes work by having moisture-impregnated insulation in the safe walls. When exposed to high temps (as in a fire), the moisture absorbs the heat by turning to steam. This is supposed to keep the interior temp below the flash point of paper.

That might be good for paper, but probably bad for coins. That's why you need to keep the silica gel fresh, since the interior atmosphere of the safe is going to be somewhat damp due to the insulation.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Keep saving and buy a BIGGER safe, youll be glad you did!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
  • The fire rating on most safes is acheived by adding sheetrock to the inside before they carpet it.

I went for the large 500 pound gun safe, installed on the second floor of my house by myself and 3 neighbors. It was not that difficult, much easier than I thought it would be.

It is filling fast. It is amazing how much stuff you decide to lock up once you get a safe place to do so.

My safe has tumbler, with 4 number combination, plus key lock to prevent moving the dial.

The only problem with getting a huge safe is I am 19 and I will be moving around quite a bit within the next few years and it will be hell to drag a 500 pound safe around.

Please don't ask me why I posted this. I thought this would somehow relate to your quest for a safe.
