catch me if I faint

I think I just bought a scarce coin at a common price. 1814 dime LARGE date WITH dot after C on reverse. According to Walter Breen it looks like a Davis-2. My S in States is between the PL in Pluribus and the O in OF is directly over the U in UNUM. Have I finally caught a break?? What might the value of this one be in F-15?image

  • I forgot to mention that according to Breen, D-2 is scarce.

    Hi 1907!

    I found it!

The coin you have is an 1814 Davis 2. It's listed as an R-3, which is not that big of a deal.

Davis says "A scarce variety. Nice F-12 to EF-40 specimens can usually be found." That would indicate that the coin does not carry a premium. According to the book all 1914 dime varieties, there are five listed, are R-2 or R-3. That would indicate that none of them are "home runs" except in very high Mint State grades.

Davis does not list any cuds, only bulges at IERCA and the olive leaves below the left wing.

The only people who seem to be willing to pay for die states are the early copper collectors. After they get one of everything, it seems they need to go back and collect by die state, which makes it hard for others join the fun. When one man needs to own 15 examples of one variety to watch the cuds grow, that leaves fewer coins for others, especially new collectors.

Years a ago a rock band member said cocaine is God's way of telling you that you are making too much money. To me die state collecting is God's way of telling you to branch out to something else. image
