  • oh snap! literally!
  • Some terrific winds to take those trees down like that, simply amazing for those of us in 'quake country.
When a tree goes down around here, usually the whole thing falls over from the roots up. Normally after a lot of heavy rains, (which we haven't seen for a long time) the ground gets soft, and the tree goes over. Amazing forces to shear those huge old trees at the trunk like that. Hope no one got hurt!

Wow. It looks like bad news--good news for you Bryan. Bad news it happened but, sure could have been a lot worse.
Very glad to hear you have come through it all right.

    Tree on house not alright.
  • I remember when Opal came through Georgia in '95. Something similar happened to my parents house, (lost a 65 year old oak) but we got lucky and it didn't hurt us or the house. the only thing good that came out of it was that firewood was cheap!!! i think some folks are still burning wood that they got in the aftermath of the storm.

Thanks Jhar and everyone else! My batteries are fading fast and there won't be any electricity here for quite a while.

If you can believe it, others have it much worse.

    Best regards to all!

My parents had a huge chinaberry tree in their back yard that came down when Opal came trough. Thankfully it didn't hit the house either. I laughed when I saw that it was down, because my dad had wanted to cut that tree down for a long time before Opal came through, but he was worried about it hitting the house. Opal took care of it for him!!!

I'll cross my fingers for you.

Though I'm on the Atlantic coast, we seldom get threatened much by those storms- we're the furthest inset portion of the Atlantic seaboard (Brunswick, GA), and haven't had a direct hit since the big 'un in 1898. The Gulf Stream usually carries 'em past us, on to SC and the Outer Banks.

It's y'all's Gulf of Mexico leftovers that seem to affect us more here, strangely enough- they come across the Florida panhandle and smack us from behind, like Earl did in 1998.

    Best of luck!

GSAGUY, We had the same thing happen to us Feb 7th of this year. You have extensive damage there and most of your entire house looks like it will have to be rebuilt. The hip roof that you have there is very similar to the one we have now and it appears that most of it and at least one exterior wall and probably many interior walls as well as your floors and water and foundation damage has occurred. Very ironic, I just moved back in and it appears that you will be moving out. I have lots of advice that I can help you with, feel free to contact me, ph. no. 541 347-1112 for any reason. Me and my family are very sorry for your loss---------------------------------------BigE
    I'm glad I am a Tree
  • I am glad to see your OK GSAGUY!!!!!!!! Good luck with the clean up, and our prayers are with everyone there that didn't fair as well.
  • Geez. That's too bad. Hope he's doing alright with the cleanup

Think what it would look like if they had got those 180 mph winds like they were before it hit land.
Really doesn't look too bad. Couple of busted rafters and some messed up cornish; least he still has a roof!
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Hey I feel for you guys down there. But if you want a change come on out to Indiana northeast Indiana to be exact. We are geological stable weather its pretty much blah, no real bad storms and such. And what more could you want we have the ulgest state quarter so far.

A little humor in bad time and a smile can help alot .

Geez, and that was only Cat 2. I live in East Central Florida so for me, it's just a matter of time before I have to deal with this.
I wish you and the others affected all the best.
  • Let's hope everything turns out ok.

It would be a good idea to cut down those trees!!! Personally I don't buy any house near big and tall trees. They are too expensive to cut down, unless a storm cut them down for you!! We had a small tree near our house in the midwest long ago, and even that came down too. It is very dangerous to live next to a big tree.

    Bryan--
I my first post I was just relieved that you were uninjured. Now, going back and looking closer at the pictures I see that there was some serious damage to your home. More than I originally saw. My deepest sympathies to you and your family. And a speedy recovery from what the storm has brought.
