PCGS makes it sound like coins are changing hands at furious rates and its a sellers market...ask the guys on ebay...ive watched for a while trying to figure out whens a good time to sell certain items. Seams like ebay is a barren wasteland at the moment..am I wrong?

Ebay is always a barren wasteland. There are gems, but it takes lots of searching, and searching. I have always felt that good dealers and serious collectors usually pick other avenues for the buying and selling of coins over Ebay. I overheard a dealer talking to another dealer at a coin show say that he doesn't waste two seconds on Ebay looking to buy coins.
The two local coin shops in my area of Salt Lake city, have more key dates in half a dozen series than you will see on Ebay in 3 months of looking. Ebay is a wasteland but I love it!

The above have been steady for a long time now. Coins that are not readily available are not hyped because dealers do not have them in quantity, if at all.

<< <i>well what i kinda ment was prices are going down and things are going unsold....not a sellers market from the looks of it. >>
Bill,
Your assessment is correct. Realized prices on eBay have come down quite a bit since spring and early summer. Since I buy more than I sell, this is a pleasing development.

PCGS's weekly headine has been very optimistic lately. The market may be going up slightly in certain series, but not in all series. Moderns are hot and they always talk about them. Type coins are solid, but other series by date may be down. I am no expert in the rare coin market, but I don't feel there is as much "buzz" as the headlines say there is.

Yes, eBay is a wasteland for the most part. It is the dumping ground for the impaired, surplus and unwanted dealer inventory. However, over time all that will change as more dealers abandon brick and mortar shops.
As for slow sales, you bet. All this I hear and read about booming sales is not confirmed by what I see. The Goldberg auction left about 30% of the lots UNSOLD. Heritage had a big auction in LB but also disappointing sales and about 24% unsold lots I was told [before returns!]. While unsold lots are a fact of life it points out maybe too many are expecting too much for their coins.
Personally, this whole to-do over toned Morgans is a bit silly with the exorbitant prices and all. One dealer felt this has been fully played out. The other bubble is the modern DCAM market, crazy prices when these coins are far from rare. Every dealer has them! Another played out theme I feel.
I've seen little change in the 19th century type pricing in a long time, only generic gold which has slid in spite of golds move up.
There are still good deals to be had on ebay, you just have to know the dealers and ignore thier auctions (no offence guys). They know thier coins and usually you'll pay retail (or more) Of course, if you don't want to take chances and are willing to pay solid money for premium coins then go for it.
I have more fun seaching for the sleepers.

In which case, why not just buy at grey sheet from my local dealer and continue to build my rapport with them? In that way, I have the coins now, I have inspected the merch, I can take them right back, even if for no other reason than I changed my mind. No Money Orders, trips to the bank, endless emails, waiting for arrival, being disappointed, returning (sometimes at my expense), etc etc yada yada yada.
It is a occasion when you find a bargain on ebay. I recently found a silver proof set I needed for my collection and God only knows why, I purchased the $110 set for $64.00. I guess the rest of the world was asleep at the switch.
It took me six full weeks to get the seller to send it. He had every excuse why it wasn't shipped. He lost my credit card number, he was out sick, his partner was on vacation. Luckily I found his shop and number in another state and called incessantly, as emails weren't being answered.
"Hello, may I speak to so and so"
"who is calling"
"Frank from Sarasota"
"uhm, he's out sick today"

I continue to "watch" items on the off chance I will be able to pick up a bargain, but at these prices, I would just as soon do business with my local guy.
