Hurricane Lili Update from Cajun Country

At 7:30 AM local time the eye of the storm is now moving onshore about 50 miles south of Lafayette, LA. Winds here are running about 50-60 mph steady and expected to increase to near 100 mph as the eye moves through this area. So far, we've still got power and telephone service.

Fortunately, this storm is small and compact and appears to be weakening rapidly having been downgraded from a Category 4 to a Category 2 Hurricane.

Thanks all for the prayers!

9:30 AM. Winds at 75 mph steady. Power out but phone lines still functioning. Neighbor's house cut in half by huge Red Oak. I'll try to post scans later.

Wish us luck. The main part of the storm is still to come.

  • A neighbors house cut in half, no power, and you are going to post pictures? I say hide and survive. Forget the forum, and real time updates.

Sounds like that newscaster feller; simulcast on tv and the radio from the "cloakroom" during Andrew. It wasn't actually the cloakroom, but it wasn't much bigger. image

  • GSAGUY (and all others ashore there) best of luck and prayers to you. Should you need assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. (We were right underneath Fran - she walked through our yard - I can understand many things about how hurricanes can be a pain.)

    Godspeed.

10:00 AM Local. Winds at 90 mph sustained. Major oak in front yard is no more...fortunately missed the house. Eye approaching Lafayette. This is getting ugly.

GSA, the wind that hit us was 115 mph, but only lasted a few seconds, a sustained wind must be very scaryimage -------------BigE

Geez, you're making me a nervous wreck. Take cover and take care!

11:30 AM Winds still in the 90-100 mph range. Major trees falling in neighborhood. Two homes across the street with trees through them. One of our big ones is down (no house damage) but another is cracking and may come through the roof. Driveway blocked....no way out except by foot. Wish us luck!!!

Well, we now have a new house guest. A very large water oak now occupies our 3rd bedroom. We watched it from the carport as it came down. Fortunately no one hurt but thank God this is only a category 2 storm.

I'll post some pics when I can.

Thanks all for your thoughts and prayers.

Bryan. Looks like the worst may be over but I'm real sorry to hear about the damage you sustained. Just glad no one was hurt. Good luck and we're praying for you.

Winds have died down significantly here as I believe the eye is passing to the west and north of us now. That should mean winds out of the opposite direction a bit later on.

Since I'm about out of trees, there's not a whole lot of damage left to do. I've got some pics but am having trouble loading them due to size. Can you believe I've still got a phone connection?

Thanks all for the thoughts and prayers! This one was tough.

As for why I live here.........it's home. I suspect that no matter where in the country one lives, there are extremes in the weather. Fortunately, we don't get a direct hit like this one too often.

I'm glad everything is okay. It's raining here today in Central NY. I'm glad I only had half a day of school today.image
