The Gorrell Indian Cents

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Gorrell Collection of Indian Cents is now slated to be sold at the FUN Show auction. It has Many of the finest knowns that Stewart Blay's set is missing. Get this:

1856 S-3 MS-66 It's the only Snow-3 in MS66 ($100K + coin)
1861 AND 1899 in MS68RD and both are all there!
A set of Flyers in Proof-65 1856 S-5, 1856 S-9, 1857, 1858LL, 1858SL, yes there are two 1856's in PR65,
1858 LL MS67
1858/7 MS64 and MS63
Complete date set in PR65RD and MS65RD or better
1864-L in Proof 64RB
1873 Double LIB MS64BN
1886 Type 2 PR66RD

Also none of the coins will be sent in for a regrade "nameplate", so some meat is bound to be left on the table.

The coins listed above nearly all came from Eagle Eye Rare Coins
Any that are mediocre, of course did not.

See you there!

Rick, I will be there! Who is selling the coins?
  • EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
    It's in the Heritage Auction

It should be listed in the registry soon, although about 10 of the 110+ coins are NGC.

    Rick,

How can you say that the 1861 an1899 in ms 68 are all there ? You have not seen them in how many years ? How do you know that Heritage is not sending the coins in for possible upgrade
Perhaps the coins fell in a swamp so the owner deceided to sell them.DON'T FORGET I was the one who told you your client consigned his coins to auction. He still has not called you !!!!

  • Surprisingly common for a consignor not to involve or inform the primary dealer and deal directly with the auction house. I think this may have long term detrimental effects on collectors as well as small dealers. However, based on my observations most collectors would do better involving their primary dealer in the arrangements. Admittedly debatable would enjoy hearing from a recent consignor of a high grade collection. What worked? What would you do differently?

Yes, It's unfortunate. Mr. Gorrell, after discussing in a "when that time comes" conversation, where I said he should let me represent him in the consigning negotiations, took my advice regarding using the auction route, with Heritage as a good choice. But when the decision was made he forgot to include me in the deal.

As a result, one of his desires - to have me write the catalog - will not be met, due to lazy wording of the contract. So I get a "thank you" from Heritage, and will get a small fee for reviweing their write ups and for color comentary.

The MS68's are great and will WOW the crowd.

It reminds me of the Antilope Valley collection of Morgan Dollars, assembled by Elliot Goldman of Allstate Coins for a customer. I was working for him at the time. It was one of the finest sets ever. Cost $1 Million to assemble. Elliot worked hard to get the right coins and charged fair markups, many only 5%.

The owner was using a Profit Sharing Plan to finance the collection, when the other members of the plan found out, they panicked and consigned the set to Bowers & Merena (FUN 1990) unreserved and without the best terms.

The set sold about 70% less than cost to happy dealers who made a foutune.

Had the plan members returned to Elliott and asked for his advice and help in getting their money back out of it, I'm certian they would have made it all, with some extra to boot!

Even if it went to auction Elliot could have helped set the reserves and marketed the buybacks.

Collectors spend all their time buying, but rarely sell with much forthought.

Thanks for the details Rick. Any one of those coins would be interesting, all of them together is mind boggling. Now the only MS67 FE is among the group as well!

I've been curious about the 1899 ever since you mentioned Epstein liked it so much he bought it back. For him to have seller's remorse about that date out of all his other amazing coins, it must be something special.

    Update, on the catalog:
I will do the catalog descriptions for the 20 or so most important coins in the collection. Under the circumstances Heritage has been very fair in their dealings.

A full update list of the collection will be available in the next Longacre's Ledger, publication of the Fly-In Club. Let em know if you want to join ($20 per year and $35 for 2 years)

    AMAZING !!!!!!!!

Is this what the Registry Forum is all about, this rather vapid "My dog is BIGGER than your dog" post?

Glad I have a cat. Bye bye.

  • I'm sure the Gorrell set is superb. However, I DO have a problem with people being self promoting and self absorbed (go ahead, flame me all you want).

"The coins listed above nearly all came from Eagle Eye Rare Coins

Eagle eye is NOT the only one who builds great Indian Cent collections. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER DEALERS OUT THERE. His statement should have been worded differently.

    Laura:

First, since your on line, how come your site is upgraded so infrequently? I've quit checking your site as a result.

Secondly, I sent my wantlist a while ago and never even received an acknowledgement - do you still do IHC's??

I would like to be a customer but can't figure out how to do it. If you offered me the 2-headed mule, I would be VERY interested!image

  • Mr. Lakesammman,

I'm not here to seek biz. But to answer your post: we DO update our site after EVERY major show or when we feel we have anough NEWPS (we do have a pull down link for inventory). I have been a bit slow to update the hot topics, but I'll stand by this comment, if there is a breaking issue, or a major show , NO ONE has a newsletter up faster than we do.

I appologize for the problem with not reposnding once we have a Want list. I will speak to our web master about that. Be assured, we DO check those lists (of which we have over 100) before and after EVERY major show. Yes, we DO still handle Indians. We're as picky so we havn't found a lot this year.

And last, as far as the mule, its placed in a major collection and probably won't come out again for years.

The first time I read that comment by Rick I took it as tongue in cheek, and got the same impression now. One of the hazards of this medium I guess. Sometimes you have to be familier with someone to pick up on their subtle humor. It also helps to have a sense of humor to begin with.

Laura -- I also have an IH wantlist gathering cyberdust with you guys. My last contact with you guys was to offer back a Legend Indian Head I had upgraded, and was told you didn't remember which it was but you weren't currently buying them (?).
  • shylock,

Yes, there was a time I was NOT buying IHC. Now the market is more correct and I am slowly starting to be a player again. I promise, your list (if I can fill it) WILL BE FILLED!

I appologize to everyone about the apparent poor communication fromthe Want lists.

I know that Laura assembled a world class set of Proof Indian
Cents.I would say they could rival any set assembled today.

    Laura,

I am very unhappy with your wantlist service. I submitted my wantlist to you a while ago, and it went unfilled. For everyone's edification, here's what I want:

    1. Peace on Earth.
    2. End world hunger.
    3. Good will towards all, including animals.
    4. A nice property on which to raise more pets.

Well, what are you waiting for? Get cracking!!!

EVP - it was obvious (to me at least) that Stewart's comment was tongue in cheek to feign disdain in order to buy the quality coins cheaper. It didn't warrant your response.

With that said - could you guys get together, beat each other to a pulp, become fast friends and buy me several beers for my trouble? image

    TDN,

I'm not sure about warranting my response, but I do think I interpreted his comments correctly. His behavior has been quite consistent -- obnoxious, immature and self-serving. If I was wrong just now, then I was wrong a few days ago too. And, so were several others who felt the same way.

If he felt that he was being misunderstood, then he should've said so. The way he responds to my commentary on him is indicative that he is every bit the donkey's hindside that I thought he was from his first posts.

The Stewie Blay collection of IHC, as displayed at LB, was all overgraded garbage. Re-toned red, just all yuck! (Can I now buy some at lower prices?)

TDN -- I have to second that . . . even though I had planned not to spill any blood on the thread. After spending a couple of hours with Stewart in person, I can only take these comments in total New York City humor. I know I'm laughing at him. We do the same down in Mississippi, we just toss in a little more sugar, any you never leave without hearing "ya'll come back now, ya hear?"

Stew -- pour a little honey on it when you say it. If you don't have any up in Metropolis, I'll send you a jug from the guy who lives on my corner.

Stewart - it's very obvious that the board in general (and EVP in particular) hasn't caught on to your sense of humor. I recommend using a wink or smile to signify when you are tongue in cheek - it really cuts down on the misunderstandings.

One of your original posts - to Ally - really offended me at first until I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt and attribut humor to it. I can see where others might not give that benefit and respond accordingly.

I must say that I was offended by Stewart a while back....some comment I took wrong....after meeting him in person at the LB show, I gotta say I like the guy. You have to admire his taste in coins....they're the only ones I've ever lusted after (well, a few of them, at least).

  • I am always offended w/Stewie. 95% I can't stand on being in the same room w/him (and he knows it). Thats just a the way it is. But he is three things:

#1) a New Yorker with that crude sense of humor, #2) He DOES put his money where is mouth is! #3) probably the BEST numismatist of ALL the collectors out there (and he DOES top 99% of the dealers w/his eye). How he picked his way through Eliasberg was the MOST impressive thing I had EVER seen. He bought the absolute "right" coins, which got the grades (vs. most dealers who ran wild). To this day, I'm still jealous of him. .
