A nice gesture on behalf of the ANA!

I was tempted to post this story long ago but decided to let things play out and hopefully post with a cooler head. Well, things have played out and I do have a cooler head.

At the Long Beach show in June, I loaned a board of 8 nicely toned coins to Gail Baker of the ANA. She had seen the coins and commented that the board would be a valuable teaching prop in one of her classes since it identified the different types of toning and color patterns typically seen on Morgan dollars. Gail said she'd use the board during the month of July and then return it to me at the ANA in New York.

Well, at the ANA she didn't have the board and I could tell she was a bit concerned about its whereabouts. About a week later I called and Gail informed me that the board had not been found. I asked if she thought it was stolen and she assured me it was not. She then said that the ANA would replace the coins but I told her to continue to search for the coins as I'd rather have the originals.

We spoke a few more times and repeatedly she commented that I was being a gentleman about the whole thing by not getting mad and making demands. I guess I just figured that sooner or later they'd find my coins and getting mad wouldn't solve the problem.

Well, they did find my coins and returned them to me before the latest LB show.

At the show I spoke to Gail again and she informed me that because I'd kept my cool, I was invited to attend next year's summer seminar in Colorado Springs free of charge! I thought that was a very nice gesture....especially since I had planned to attend the event.

So, some problems involving the ANA do get resolved in a manner beneficial to both sides!!! Thanks ANA.

That's nice to hear you got compensated for your keeping cool. I guess the ANA isn't a complete failure...................

I'm glad you were patient, sounds like it paid off handsomely. I bet it wasn't Gail's fault they got misplaced. I remember you saying during the seminar you lent coins to them but I didn't see them in our class.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

You are a wise man, gsaguy. What would losing your cool have accomplished? Absolutely nothing. Infact, it would have doubled your potential losses. Coins gone, and a wake of personal carnage to deal with too. As it was, the coins were returned and amends were made. I know it must have taken some resolve to be patient. But, I believe your behavior was a model to all of us. Yes, every now and then people need a wake up call. But it's all about the way it's done. My compliments to you.

I am not surprised to read about your coolness under what must have been a stressful situation. In my dealings with you , you have been nothing but a gentleman (a southern genlteman) I think is the term I've heard. I am happy to hear about your recovered coins. In all our conversations you never once mentioned anything about them. Choosing to keep this between you and the ANA. Your actions are a model for all of us on these boards

I bet you don't do that again.

    gsaguy,
Sounds like a great story turned out well. I'm glad that your undoubtedly well prepared exhibit was found and returned safely; I am equaly pleased that Gail and the ANA rewarded your patience and understanding with a nice reward. Gail is a lovely caring person and I am sure she was suffering with you. By the way, where was it discovered?

I thought this was going to be a story about the ANA returning the money to ACG.

Maybe they're planning to, but they're just having a little trouble finding it. image
