Large scans here:

1864 obverse

1864 reverse

The scans have been lightened 20% to better show detail. Coin is actually more of a medium chocolate brown. I'm thinking solid EF45 on this one. What do you guys think?

  • I agree with EF, but I think you should wait and find a nice AU-MS for a little more. There are alot of EF's but less AU/MS pieces. The price isn't much higher, and in the long run, you will be rewarded since there is a greater chance of the higher grade pieces going up.

    Lanlord,

Funny you should ask. A couple friends and I debated that at length. It's an optical illusion.

  • I see. I thought I saw the other day where you bought a MS-62 one. That would be a good one for a matched set.

    Cameron,

I bought the MS62 as an example of a mint state coin. Since I have no experience with these, I needed something for grading comparison. That grade in the key (1872) would be way, way beyond my means.

It looks solid for an EF, especially if it is just a little darker in real life as you indicate.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

Lanlord - You're right on the money.

I don't for a moment believe the actual coin is, but the photograph is inverted. Low spots show as high spots.
"some people" simply won't believe it. It's not an optical illusion. image

Same coin, inverted and color-corrected a bit

dudes, XF? c'mon! i think it's au-ish, au-55? pleasing coin based on the scan. funny thing about the 2c's is that there ain't much diff. in price from xf to au.

  • Definately XF, too much wear for AU.

What's with the incuse issue? How about seeing the optometrist? These images look fine to me. Besides, maybe the eye doc can get you some grade correcting coin goggles!

Well, I scored this one for $33.56.image The bonus is that it's rotated 180. Yes, I know they don't carry any premium, but I think it's cool.image
