I don't want to get your hopes up, but as I posted on another thread, I got one roll of halfs this week, and went back to the bank for more. In seven rolls I found 21 silver clad, 4 1964s and a 63 and 63D Franklin. Most of your rolls will be lousy, but you will find some similarly wrapped rolls with goodies.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

Remember the Neil tax. Every third silver coin goes to me. image
  • Some of those halves in the mid to late 1980's and early 1990's really bid a lot. Has anyome ever had luck finding better date BU halves from the bank?

On a related topic Coin World had a front page article about how the supply of Kennedy Halves is clogging the federal vaults. There are 137.6 million half dollars reported to be in storage. To put it in perspective that is more than the total mintage of 1998-2001(133,062,000 coins). I wouldn't be suprised if they don't make any 2002 halves for circulation.

I just looked through $500.00 worth of half and came up with only one 40% sliver half. The latest date i saw was a 2000 i got two of them.

P.S. I also got two pennies in my rollsimage

I collect mainly circulated US silver because I really cannot afford graded coins or older stuff right now. I never thought of buying large quanities of coins from the bank. Will any bank do this for you, and do they charge anything for doing so?

Also, I am starting to get into Kennedy Halves... what year were they made with 40% silver? I had always thought the 64's were the only ones with any silver in them.

    Thanks

    1964 was 90% silver
    1965-1970 was 40% silver

All you can do is go to a bank and ask them if they could order you some halfs. I did this and they got my halfs in one week (they got them from BRINKS) I'm going to try the smaller banks around here i think there is a better chance of finding somthing.
  • I was at the bank today and picked up some halves. They actually had $200 worth in the safe. I grabbed $100 of them. Out of that I found one 40%, and it's pretty crappy looking. I think I'll stop in later this week and get the other $100 worth they have.

  • Why waste your time if you only found one crappy looking half out of $100.00? Now if it was 25% silver, I say go for it.

Strange, every one of my rolls is 100% 1964's.

  • You know it surprises me when folks ask, "why do you bother for only one 40% silver half?" Well, I guess it's really the thrill of the hunt! Personally, I love to search through rolls of halves to see what I'll find. Now that I've moved, I have a host of new banks to plunder, so in a few weeks when the rain really starts, and I finally have a weekend free, guess what I'll be doing??? image
  • Do you guys run into trouble with banks where you don't have an account? I have had many problems with banks around my area (not coin related) when I wasn't a customer of theirs.

  • I usually just don't point out the fact that I am not a customer and they never notice. And if they do, then I just say thanks and leave.
  • kiefer,

I don't consider it a waste of time at all. The teller at the bank didn't tell me, "Here's half of what we have. The other half has exactly the same coins." I think my odds of finding some keepers would be greatly diminished if I didn't even try.

Every time you try something once, and fail, do you never try again?

Basically, what I'm trying to say is... your attitude SUCKS. I made that post as a report of today's search. Perhaps I didn't word it clearly enough, but it was in no way a solicitation for your opinion on whether it was worthwhile. I realize that in an open forum, such as this one, you have every right to express your opinion. I just think that in some cases there would be no great loss felt by the community if you kept it to yourself.

    So, BITE ME!

I finished looking through the other $500.00 and found 21 more 40% (makes a total of 22) and I found two 90% (makes a total of 2) and i didn't get any pennies in my rollsimage overall i was happy with what i found. Now all i have to do is find a way to get rid of them.

P.S. Does anyone know what a circulated roll of 40% silver halfs is worth?????

Any kennedy half varieites out there????

I picked up a circulated roll of 40% halves for $14 so not much of a premium. Got an original bank roll of 1969D halves that I may go through later. Maybe I'll get some nice ones? I had 3 66's and 3 65's in my 1964 JFK roll. (that I had certified)
  • I went to 3 banks today, and none of them had any halves. I went ahead and ordered a total of $600 from 2 different banks so I guess we will see what happens. One of the banks said she would just order a box ($500) from her vendor so I have a feeling they will be all new ones. Banks treat these things like they are infectious lol. Hopefully they wont mind taking them back after I sort thru them. image

I picked up $100 in quarters while I was there too.... found nothing but one bicentiniel.

  • I have been searching half dollars for a while. I usually pick up $500 to search a few days before I make a trip to atlantic city. I never have any problems getting rid of half dollars at a casino.
  • All this talk of of serching rolls. gave me the bug.
I went to 2 banks a got 5 rolls of nickels from each.

I found a 1939 in the first roll.
I ended up with 1 from the 40's and 2 from the 50's
nothing earth shattering but a fun night.

My local bank charges 10% when you bring in coins/change rolled or not, so I stopped looking.

It is the hunt that's fun. Around here we normally only four '65 thru '69 BU (Beat UP) Kennedys.
