What coin(s) have eluded you for a Long time that you CAN afford but can't find!?

for me........
1936d 3.5 leg buffalo nickel

I've also kinda watched for a nice low grade 1916 DDO nickel. I stupidly passed on a PCGS G4 a couple years ago.

  • Believe it or not, once I started looking for a decent 1963P half in MS65FBL at a DECENT price, it took me almost 3 years to locate a suitable specimen!

1967 SMS Kennedy in MS68CAM. They come up very rarely. Almost had one in a Heritage Live auction a while back, but a floor bidder got me.

1936-S Lincoln in PCGS MS67RD...pop report shows 23 but only know of one that sold in the last two years and I only found out after the fact. I've also never seen a MS66RD or NGC MS67RD that had a shot at PCGS MS67RD. Anyone want to sell me one?...I'll pay REALLY good money for one.

  • The only modern coins that I will collect now are SMS Lincoln cents in MS65CAM or better. I have yet to score that elusive 1965 SMS MS65 CAM 1c. This coin is sooooo tough but cheap considering how hard it is to find. Someday though....image

When I was working on my old 1798-2000 nongold type set, I had a time finding a nice midgrade 1798 cent without porosity. I was shopping for the nicest Fine I could come across. It was challenging finding an affordable middle-of-the-road coin with no problems, even though I had the money. Even searching on eBay and going to a show or two, I had little luck. It took me about a year and a half to two years to find one I liked. Everything out there seemed to be either Fair, AG, corroded, bent or beat up, or gorgeous AU-UNC with four- and five-figure pricetags. Very little in between. Maybe this was because collectors hang on tight to such things.

In the end I think I did OK- I found this one at a nice price, raw. I submitted it to SEGS before I knew their reputation, and it came back F15 with no problems noted, so I was a happy camper. In retrospect, it had the slightest porosity that might have bagged it at PCGS or NGC, and was probably a F12, but it was still nice enough for me at the time. (Note that the pic does not flatter it- it was much nicer in person).

On the "Darkside", there are frequently supposedly cheap coins that are tough to find. When collecting British large pennies toward the end of that pursuit, I had all the keys but lacked some common dates. This has also happened with my current Irish collection.

An honestly graded VG or F 1914-P Barber Half. I've come to realize that Barber coins in general are hard to find in the intermediate grades, they're either G or Unc with very little in between.

I have to say, that's a major-league challenge! To complete something like that is a true quest, where no amount of money is going to solve the problem.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

A 1936-S No Bands Merc in 66. I did pass on one last year due to a funds shortage for coin purchases, but since then I have been on the lookout again...with no luck so far. The last 6 months I have been looking for 1945-P No Band Merc in 67 with no luck.. but there are a lot of them, so I will be patient. The problem there is the overpriced xx% bands that people want a premium for. A coin is either FB or not IMHO, so I will not pay a premium for a percentage of FB.

Wow, I feel like my first choice is really a low end coin (compared to what I have seen so far), but I just can't find a decent one. It is a 1906o quarter in vf/ef. This really isn't a killer coin, I just haven't found a nice one yet. But the fun, it's all in the chase.

The other is a 1901s quarter. When ever I have enough saved up to buy it, I can't find it, when I see it, I've already spent the savings elsewhere. Someday I'll get it together at the same time.

Broderick – A circulated Hawaiian Half Dollar?

Not to be too flip about it, but I have seen a few that were really AU in MS-61 or 62 holders. The chances of finding that coin in REALLY circulated condition remote. The coin was issued at $2.00, which was high price for a commemorative half dollar in 1928, and it’s been a sought-after collectors item since then. Not too many people spent them or carried them as pocket pieces.
