This is an interesting question. I think you would need to carry a pocket piece for 30 + years to wear to down to good. I'm not sure how normal circulation wears a coin compared to being a pocket piece, but in 1964, most of the Washington quarters from the 1930s I (or more precisely, my parents) received in change would probably grade good - very good. Occasionally some would grade fair, and standing liberty quarters were commonly worn to fair-AG. But, it seems to require 30 or more years of circulation.

Well now, I guess it depends on what you're rubbing it with.
Try some 200 grit emery paper. Should wear down rather quick.
If you're rubbing it with jello jigglers on the other hand, you ain't gonna live long enough to wear it down.

Go to a hobby shop and get a rock tumbler.
You can run it 24 hours a day.
Depending on the grit size, you should be able to reduce a coin to a slug in short order.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Whoops. Own it. Done it.
What you end up with is a coin that has an unnatural appearance- kind of "grainy" under strong magnification. And that's even using the lightest powder grit size and seven days with the tumbler. I've done it different ways, with various results, all with the same conclusion.*
There just isn't like that natural- through the years- pocket, good luck charm wear.

Looks like a power sander would work, but you would this need to give it "natural" wear to smooth the coins surface before grading.

the old rock-tumbler trick works great.

this may sound gross, but i know a guy who works retail and walks around all day. he will take a cleaned bust half and wear it inside his shoe so that he is stepping on it for days on end to wear the whole thing down and lose the hairlines. i'd think he'd have sore feet and stinky coins by now, but it does seem to work.

Another way is to enlist a bunch of friends. Have everyone rub it, keep it in the pocket, and jangle with other coins. The more people you have, the faster it will wear.
