How long have PCGS, etc been grading?

I know if I searched, I could find it, but I thought maybe one of you would know off the top of your head how long the grading companies have been doing what they do.

Thanks!

  • PCGS - 1986
    NGC - early 1987
ANACS - sold to amos press in 1991 by the ANA
    ICG - 1997?
    NTC - 2001?

That is all I know off the top of my head.

pcgs, started by david hall..1986 i still remember the big coin world article about it all, and what a stir it caused. some where all for it, and many others where outraged. one part i do remember well, a man wrote in and said he was going to take that coin world article , and use it to line his birdcage.
  • I went to his coin grading seminar in San Diego, 85 or 6. I was expecting to learn how to grade. Instead he told us about the new system that could determine coin grades with 99% accuracy and PCGS was started.

With all the ills of the grading services I would never want to return to the chaotic days before that when the dealers all sold MS 65s that they just bought as 63s. The were adds all over about what they paid but when you got to thier table somehow the coin never made the grade, even if you bought it from them at that grade the week before. Way too much time was wasted playing these games.

as I remember ANACS was the first to become widely used in the early 80's everyone seemed to want a coin certified by ANACS and a couple of years later PCGS came about and ANACS fell into the background and after that grading services popped up everywhere. I can't be more specific on dates because I really can't remember them that goodimage. mikeimage
  • Most of my Dad's Morgans and Peace dollars were bought in the early 80's, and most of their holders have "MS 65+" written on them. As I learn, I am quickly realizing there ain't no way most of 'em are 65's. Grading standards have changed, but also I think what you describe, coynclecter, happened to my dad. He bought mostly mail-order.
