Bust Dollar at Heritage

This is the dollar I am considering bidding on. I think it is very well struck and has a great color with almost perfect surfaces. It looks as nice as many AUs I have seen, and I think it is a great type coin. Anyone here have any comments on this one. I appreciate all. By the way is anybody actually going to the sale that will be viewing this one in person?? I think this coin is PQ for an Xf. Is it worth near AU money???

Thanks, Jay

Looks like a very nice coin to me.
Btw, this coin has already been bid up to $2,200-$2,530 with buyers fees.

Try not to bid thru eBay you pay 5% more.
  • Placid,

I will bid from the Heritage site if I do. I was actually the underbidder at this level. Just trying to feel things out. I am still unsure of how high I want to go on this one. I personally like it as much as many AU coins I have seen. I try to mainly buy eye appeal as much as the grade, and I think this coin ranks right up there.

I see the heritage value index has $2,800 - $3,400 for it.
I don't think it would go above that unless someone else really wants it bad.

  • that looks PQ for a 45 grade! Great obverse!

looks like an average xf-45 to me, definitely not au. boy, it's another case where i would really want to see that puppy in person, and see if it has any mint luster left. all i can say is, if your going sight-unseen, good luck. i hope it's as nice as it appears!

Just from the image, it looks like a very good strike and at first glance, appears to be an original coin. My gut feeling is that it is graded MS 45 because there is no mint luster. Stike-wise, it looks better than most MS 50s I've seen.

You might want to call Heritage and get a coin consultation on this lot.

I'm not a bust dollar person, but if I were, it looks a little dark for my taste in appearance.

The picture on ebay is pretty small.

    Here are the large versions.

On a coin like this, you have to see it. The true value will be heavily dependent on how much lustre, if any remains and you can't tell that from a scan. If you can't examine the lots yourself, pay someone to look at it for you (3% is the usual fee); it's worth it.
  • Very nice coin i looks PQ might grade out a AU-50 draped bust coins are always good to see in person though.

  • I did ask someone to look at the coin for me. They said the obverse had been harshly cleaned at one point, and I can definately find a better one. I don't want to mention any names, but it was a very repected member of this forum. I guess I can quit worying about coming up with the money. I just read another thread on the subject of not having money when coins come up. In my experience, I usually have ended up with a much nicer coin by waiting

you did the right thing, getting a sigh-seen opinion! bust material is extremely subjective, and i will constantly urge everyone to SEE the coin before even considering buying. no matter what a slab says, or how convincing an argument is made by the "auctioneer", LOOK at the coin, and let your conscience be the guide.

you done good, wisconsin, & you'll be glad when you have the $ for one that might be love at first sight!
