Is that a mintmark at bottom on the reverse?
The flat spot on the hair makes me think au might be the strike thou I no expert on those.
The reverse looks ms but not full band.

The six in the date looks odd in the picture like it's doubled or something. Probably just the picture.
  • Mighty pretty, probably at least an MS64 or MS65 but no Full Split Bands designation on that one. Now if you have it's twin with the D on the reverse.....CHA CHING!!!!!!!!!!!imageimage

I just took a second look after seeing an AU grade given out and I conceed that their may indeed be some rubs on both Obverse and reverse. I can't grade worth a darn from scansimage
  • Unfortunately, no "Ka-ching" Plain ol' 1916.
  • The coin looks to have alot more luster on the reverse, but the obverse is more dull with some rub in Liberty's hair. I still say AU, but as we all know a coin can look very different in person.

I thought it looked 65 on the obverse, but the flat diagonal band on the reverse makes we wonder; is that just a really weak strike?

  • I agree, the rev looks much better. I guess AU50-53.
  • How could it be unc? To me, the hair shows wear.
  • Without seeing the coin in person I can't tell for sure it's wear. The coin clearly exhibits a weak strike, which can look like wear in a scan. It has some luster to it, which should be the case for anything in the AU to MS range so that doesn't give us a clear picture either. Coindaughter, does your father have a grade assigned to the coin????

Yeah, that's funny... The hair has that flat spot, and the lower diagonal band on the reverse is just about GONE, but the rest of this dime is pretty crisp... So is it WEAR, or just a very poor strike? Let's hear some expects... image

  • This one does not have a grade assigned. And unfortunately, I don't have the coin; just the scan right now. Not that it would help for my ignorant eyes to see it and try to discern weak strike vs. wear.

I'm hoping my sis can get a better scan.
  • Gut feel said 63-64. The wear on the hair might be a weak strike.

  • Looks to me like a AU50-53,seems to me its wear not a weak strike.

    Hello:

Weak, Weak strike for a 1916 dime from any Mint. That coin looks more like a 1919D coin instead of a 16P. Just taking a guess at the grade it would probably be in the 63 or 64 range. The strike takes it out of anything higher. The Hair and lower diagonal band seems to be what is affected on a coin struck like this one. I doubt if either the hair or diagonal band is wear. If they were you would see wear in other places on the coin.
