U.S. Mint Problems

Hello everyone. I have a question for everyone that i need your opinoin on. I have been collecting modern commemoratives, Silver, Gold and Platinum Eagles. I had recently sent the 2002 West
Point commemorative to PCGS for grading and to my surprise it came back PR66 DCAM.
PR66!! What's wrong with this picture. Also I sent out 2 Silver Eagles and they cam back PR68 DCAM, still in my opinion, these are terrible grades for coins that were just made by the mint recently. I had thought about just buying them from others already slabbed, but the prices go up 10 to 50 dollars depending on the coin, also what if it was the 1995 Silver Eagle that I could have gotten from the mint much cheaper but decided to wait. Boy! would I have to pay premium. Anyway my question is. If I still decide to buy coins from the mint how many of each type would you order to get a few really good coins. Would you send them all to get graded and then sell the low coins or would you only send the coins you though would make a good grade and return the the others to the mint stating poor quality.

Thanks everyone in advance.

  • BobbyD - that's a tough one. I've had mixed luck with mint products lately. I got an MS68 Sac from a mint set a few weeks back, and an MS70 commemorative. But my silver proof sets have been very, very poor. Lots of PR64s, lots of CAMs, lots of damaged ASE proofs. The mint has also been hard on returns lately.

I started off the year by submitting the best of what I could find, then returning the rest to the mint for replacement. With the off-and-on-scarcity of the silver proof sets, I've been afraid to send too much back to the mint because I might never see them again... I have definately stopped sending in (to PCGS) the majority of what I get from the mint. I spend quite a bit of time analyzing them and making decisions now.

To paraphrase another board member, "they don't make PR69! DCAMS like they used to."
  • Thanks for info bear. Yes the mint products really stink these past couple years. Thanks again.

  • The Mint products this yesr have been pretty bad, at least the ones I have gotten. I went through over 30 proof ASEs to get 2 that I felt would go PR69DCAM, and they got the grade.

The mint sets are hit and miss, some of them are so bad that it is hard to believe that they are actually struck "specially" for inclusion in the Mint Sets. I returned so many that the Mint sent me a group of replacements ( 10) and didn't charge me for them. I think they were trying to tell me "thats the best we have" LOL.

They are struck specifically for mint sets. Struck over and over and over again by objects and other coins and fingers.

Wait, you mean you didn't want that type of specialty striking?
  • It seems cheaper in most cases to just buy the modern coin already in the slab. Unless you get really good at only sending in raw coins that end up with the grade you expect you will have to pay to get lower grades than you want. Then you need to sell those and try again. It can get expensive.

LOL! Maybe ANACS would slab a few as problem coins with net grades. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • I usually purchase my Mint products as soon as they come out but after reading about how bad the Silver Proof sets were I decided to wait and see if the Mint improves the quality on the next production run. The Silver Proof sets were back ordered for a while and I am looking forward to the comments on this wave of deliveries.
My 2002 Mint sets are actually VERY nice compared to prior years so I think that the quality control staff at the mint may have correctd the problems there.
