Submitting hazy proof coins for grading

I've got a couple of silver proofs I want to submit but they have some hazing. I've read that haze doesn't affect grading but I'd like to hear from anyone who has eperience in this area.

So simply - has anyone submitted hazy coins to PCGS?
If so, what kind of coin (silver or gold), how much haze, and what were the results.

Thanks in advance.

  • Haze can effect a coins grading. Look at proofs. With haze, the graders can sometimes not see the Cam/DCam in coins. With MS coins it may not be so bad, but the haze may be hiding marks and the graders may be hazetant (image) to grade it high.

  • I agree with Cameron...

I've had a few modern silver proofs come back as 68s lately because of haze in the metal surface (non-dippable).

In addition, you can go from DCAM to CAM in almost all situations where there is haze on the mirrors.

There are a number of members who specialize in collecting modern proofs, I am sure they can help. It seems that many turn haze in the slab. At least I hope this was the case, or next time anyone feels like poohing an ICG, Segs, or NGC deep cameo proof, take a look at these 4 quarters in the Teletrade auction tonight.

Haze will absolutely affect the grade on a proof and, if there's enough, it will also kill the DCAM designation - in severe cases, it will kill the CAM designation. Do you have scans of the coins?

  • Totally agree on modern proofs, dont expect a 69 dcam if you have any visible haze. You might very gently dip your coins and hope the haze goes away before submitting. Russ has the magic formula for dipping.
  • I've got a scan of one coin but have not posted an image in this forum before. Tell me how (or where) and I will. Also, what's a good dip for haze. I've got jeweluster but have not used it before.

Here's a pic. Notice the haze in the center and @ 6 o'clock.

I usually get beat up on grade worse for "field frost" than "haze", on modern proof coins anyway. field frost, being etched into the surface, affects the depth of the mirrors, while haze that floats on top makes the mirrors blurry but doesn't always kill the cameo effect. ironically, on a MS coin, field frost might help the grade, due to the eye appeal of a satin-like finish.

    BSqr,

Assuming the other side is no worse, the coin would still go DCAM, but it won't grade higher then 68, and may only go 67.

  • Russ is right. You will only be wasting your money! Better to sell the coins raw and use the money to buy the PR-69 DCAM. Good luck!
