Interesting observation I've had upgrading sets

Just to get my mind off and hopefully keep me out of the PCGS/NGC topics here, I wanted to mention something I have noticed when upgrading sets that I probably should have realized would happen, but didn't really.

The more you upgrade each coin in a set, the harder it is to find an upgrade to the next point for that same coin (year and date). Therefore, even though it costs more each new grade you go up, sometimes your spending can slow down. For example, when I had a bunch of MS64 Ikes, I would see 65s all over the place, and could buy a bunch of coins. Now that I have some 65s, I don't see as many 66s (of the same dates) tempting me. When one does come up, sometimes maybe the price is already too high, or I don't care for the scan of it, or whatever, so I don't buy coins as often (of course, like I said earlier, they cost more at each higher level).

I am noticing this with my Peace $ Reg set as well (which I have been upgrading, but not actually entering them into the PCGS Reg until I get some more). I have a 22-D in 65 now, but I don't find many 66s tempting me. When I had a 64, I saw alot of 65s around. Now, I don't need to worry about them!

Just thought someone may be interested!image

  • The real fun comes in down grading a set. Find an example with better eye appeal in a lower grade. Sell off the higher graded coin, buy the lower, and use the extra money for whatever floats your boat.

Guess that doesn't help you if you're in the registry set sweepstakes, but I find it to be a worthy challenge. And I'm not knocking the registry. As Joseph Cambell said "follow your bliss." Or was it Tim Leary?

I only see the coin I need all over the place after I've finally tracked one down and bought it at stupid money.image

Yep. Welcome to the world of upgrades and Registries! I found the same scenerio when I was chasing down Kennedies in Mint State.
Typical example: "MS65- $20.00. Cool, I own it! Oh, oh- there's a MS66 and it's only $40.00! Shoot, I should have just waited. Oh well, let me get that MS66 and I can always eBay my MS65 (sure enough- sells for about $12.00). NO! Not an MS67 on Barlow's price sheet! Dang! Ok, so I'll own that and then somehow sell the MS66. No problem. (two weeks later the MS67 arrivesimage.
What's this? My MS66 has better eye appeal than the MS67. Now what? Do I want the point or the "coin"?"

It's about here I decided to bail out completely... image
