Opinions wanted on a registry idea.

How would everyone feel if PCGS decided to create Young Numismatists registry sets? Only people 18 and under could enter their sets. I was just thinking maybe like type sets to start off with and maybe work from there. Let's be honest here, when a kid wants to buy a coin from a well known dealer, they just brush the kid off, not taking them seriously. I have run into this many, many, many times before. They treat you with less respect. I think kids only sets would be a positive influence on the future of Numismatics. It will let kids actually try to compete in the registry sets, without having to worry about the "big boys" with all of their top pop coins blowing away any dreams the kids have had. What are your opinions on a registry set like this?

    LW,

Sounds like a good idea but you'll have to define "kid".....I'm forty and still consider myself a "kid"image at heart anyway!

    who's going to check ID's?

Really, If I wanted. Couldn't I delete my FE set and re-register it under my son's name? (not that my set is anything fantastic in either place)
  • I realize that people could cheat, but they're the ones that would have to live with it. Any person that takes away a kid's dream is unethical and morally incompetent.

PS: A kid would be defined as 18 and under.image

  • I for one think it would be a wonderful way for younger collectors to really get into their sets!

As much as I hate to say it, considering the sourceimage, I think it's a GREAT idea. My concerns would be management and verification as well as level of participation. Do we have enough YMs for PCGS to make a go of it?

    my statement was purely hypothetical.

  • Of course you're not, you're a police officer.image However, most of the police offers I know are very corrupt.

Sounds like a good idea to me... mabey you should talk to Rick next time he does a Q&A session.

P.S. - I know what you mean about people treating you differently when your a kid. Three or four years back, I was at a flea market and was looking at different coins from a dealer. I was intrigued by one of the coins the dealer had in the glass, so I asked how much, and the dealer replied "more than youve got"... I later researched about the coin... it was a stone mountain commem (I was a real newbie to coins back then) and it was marked AU+... so it wasn't even a $40 coin. That guy pissed me off royal!

  • The disrespect I get is the main reason why I don't go to shows anymore. They're just A*holes that don't care about the future of numismatics, just money! They think that all of the kids have next to no money to spend. In many cases, that's true, but other times it's not. It's their loss, not mine.

  • LW - I think its a great idea. In the meantime, why couldn't PCGS just add the YN designation next to the name in the rankings so everybody could see the young sets without opening a separate registry. Maybe BJ would add that. Seems like a no brainer.

I think it is a fantastic idea, and I don't really think adult collectors would want to mess it all up. I realize there are several of you just poking holes, but I don't think it would happen.

LW, keep going to shows. Don't let the turds win.

PCGS already puts a YN next to the young numismatists if they want it there (there is an option to put it there).

  • I already have the YN designation next to my sets. The coins that make the top sets rarely come on the market and only trade within a tight circle. I'm not even close to that circle. I feel that my age is getting in my way and it really makes me mad. Also, most of the older people have steady, good paying jobs, so they can build a set pretty easily. My sets I've paid for all by my self. I have no job at all. Most of my assets are protected and can't withdraw them until an older age. I'm just feeling kind of hopeless right now.

The circle is growing. You are on the right track. There is no rush. You are way ahead of most of us at your age. Be proud of your achievements and abilities. Keep up the good work.
  • its a good idea but most kids only collect raw coins and dont know what pcgs is image

How true that is... I didn't know what PCGS was until about a year and a half ago. I remember about three years ago I bought a PCGS morgan, but I just thought the slab was a case for it and I tried without success to crack it out:-p.

I also think it's a great idea LW,if PCGS would give the YN a lower submission price it may well work.Al

Littlewicher - Have you ever tried to sell any coins either raw or PCGS slabbed ? All collectors have to sell their coins for many reasons ? YOU CAN ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PROFIT IN COINS.

MANY COIN DEALERS ARE GENEROUS and as soon as they figure out that you can help them and it is not a one way street........things will start looking up !!!!!

    Good Luck !!
  • In theory that is a great idea and I support it but how many kids will get "too much" help from their elders and no build it themselves.
