Check out this Isabella. Any chance PCI got it wrong and it really IS a Proof?!

Proof Isabellas are one RARE coin! Is there a chance PCI messed up on this one (calling it a MS60PL) and it truly is a Proof?

  • It sure is a nice coin and even has cameo! They could have possibly messed up, but the old PCI were usually pretty accurate with their grading.

  • What about the reverse? There are two sides to every coin.

This is the new PCI (don't let the green outlined insert trick you. The FONT gives it away-).

  • So the new PCI will slab using the old green label that they are not supposed to be using anymore with the "new gold label"?

Not exactly. PCI used the green outlined inserts for a few months before starting their "Gold Label" ad campaign. The management (actually the old PCI was bought out with new players installed) change brought on the NEW PCI (in phylosophy and grading). That's when they went downhill. It's not just the gold label you have to watch out for. The "tells" on this one is the font used.
The " g " in mintage is different the old inserts and the dollar sign (when there is one) is totally different.

There was a thread running on the Coin forum side that had a comparision shot of the old and new labels. Maybe someone could dig that up and link it here?

In the meantime, there is a slight likelihood this Isabella is a Proof, and I'd love to get some opinions on that too.

I amost am going to! But, if it's a business strike it's been cleaned and probably isn't a great coin in person. He wants full MS retail too.

  • I would ask the seller if he has a return policy.

  • Rare indeed!

PCGS has only graded three of them in Proof.

    2 in PR-58
    1 in PR-62

I bet this is not a proof or has something else wrong with it, otherwise it would be in a PCGS slab. has anyone asked for the reverse picture?

  • I don't know anything about Isabellas. But doesn't it look like proof like Morgan dollars? I would think the fields would be better polished on the real proofs. But, like I said, I don't know those coins...

I think it is a business-strike prooflike coin with many hairlines and accurately graded at MS60PL.

I guess there is an ever so slight possibility that this coin is a proof but for me i grade this coin 375 dollars AND AN OVERDIPPED UGLY BANGED UP 375.........LOL

sincerely michael that WAS A GREAT POST WE NEED MORE LIKE THESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS PAT!
  • Proof Isabellas are very tricky. I have seen many proofs and very many PLs. PCGS has an inhouse policy not to grade on a regular basis proof Isabella any longer(this from a retired grader) since there is too much controversy over the striking characteristics. The die that was used was the same for the proofs and the PLs. Proof s will have a mirror between the lettering as well as a fully struck cord of wool on the reverse maiden. There is also a small triangle of proof reflection under the arm of the reverse maiden, but this is not a definte characteristic. In addition, many isabellas were struck well with high rims, so the major proof characteristic is fully square denticles and proof surfaces between the denticles.
