The most undervalued series?

I've been reading that certain series, like Lincoln cents, are bringing suprising money. What series out there would you consider undervalued, that is, selling for much less than it is expected to, and has the potential of increasing in value quickly, that is within 5 years. Please exclude moderns from this. image

  • Right now I think MS65 Franklins (non-fbl's) are a steal - a lot of Franklin's don't reach this level, but nonetheless most collectors poopoo this coin because it's non-fbl. I think when FBL's get ridiculously expensive this is the next segment that's going to get really hot.

  • I think Roosies are perpetually undervalued/underappreciated, as are Franklins. I would also throw Peace dollars in there, as I think they are ignored under the shadow of their older cousin's popularity.
  • Gotta agree with Frank on the non-FBL Franklins in 65. Some of them just seem to be going crazy low right now.

    Without a doubt the following:

    1. 1884+ Liberty nickels in MS64+
    2. 1946-1955 Roosevelt dimes in MS67+
    3. 1971s IKE S$ MS67-69
    4. 1931D and S Mercs MS64FSB.

These are extraordinarily undervalued . Who agrees?

    Brian.
  • The Barber series especially halves are undervalued in circulated grades VG and above. Coins graded XF - AU that are original are very difficult to find.

puh-leeze! i gotta believe that late-date half-cents in high grade are ridiculously undervalued. check out mintages and survival dates! most undervalue of all: proof half-cents.

    btw: great thread question

I agree about the high grade and proof half cents. I was thinking within my budget. I wish
    could afford them. lol

  • Bust half dollars, bust half dimes, and bust dimes.............thankfully!
  • I've been of the opinion for a long time that Roosevelts' are one heck of a forgotten series. Granted, they aren't inherently attractive or collectible, at present, but.... its' a tough series to put together beyond high grades. As with all series, there have been numerous changes over time and the "silver melt years" obviously decimated their population. Try to put together a set with fully struck lower bands from '46 to date along with all the varieties. I have and it's NOT easy! Yeah, Roosevelts suck but one of these days thet will come into their own!
  • Barber dimes and quarters in MS65 seem cheap to me. Also colonial coins, in general, and some 19th century proof coins like liberty nickels and three cent nickels. Oh, and how about early quarters (e.g., 1805 or 1806 bust quarters in F/VF condition) - pretty scarce and great type coins!

based onprices, graded population, and overall number of pieces to survive - Cal fractional gold - period 1 and 2.

  • Proof Gold !!! Duh! Check the mintages and check the "premium" over business strikes! Should 2x in the next 5 yrs. but you need to pony up $4k/coin to play. Ouch!

More affordable and more interesting are colonial pieces, talk about history!! Coins from the 1700s which are "flowing" are $1k+ but you can nab a colonial for a few hundred. Very overlooked.

Most hyped coin? State quarters!!! Everybody is saving these! Will never be worth much in our life time.
  • Whats hot would have helped me more - did we miss many series?

19th century Bust, Seated, Barber....especially better dates in MS and higher grades. Smaller denoms like 2c, 3c, 5c are also underrated but the copper/nickel MS coinage always seems to be underpriced.

Early 1800's rarities seem in the doldrums - the 1838-O half, 1827 quarter, 1802 half dime, 1823/2 quarter, etc. These are coins that once were the cream of the crop and now have fallen a bit by the wayside in popularity.

I'd have to say Seated quarters.

in general and of course there are many many exceptions
    but in general

any coin with monster tremendous eye appeal and monster fantastic qualities along with high grade and low pop

    sincerely michael
  • I agree with JTRYKA, Roosevelts and Non-FBL Franklins are very undervalued and no longer a really simple set to assemble in a respectable grade/condition.
  • in theory, no series is underpriced as the market sets the price and is always right. however, within different series there are many sleepers. TDN's observation about early rarities is on target - very underpriced relative to general market strength. if you are able to identify the sleepers among early dates (many of these were once 'keys') i predict a strong upside once the 'moderns' clamor winds down.

I thought we were excluding moderns from the discussion. But as long as they are
brought up; Any regular issue modern from '65 - '98 in grades just under the pop-tops
are amoung the most under-valued coins. These coins exist in limited numbers and as
the ranks of collectors swell there will not be enough of the ultra grade coins to satisfy
the demand. Demand to date has been quite limited as evidenced by the fact that a
pop-top population of only a few dozen is sufficient to put downward pressure on the
    price.

Cointagious is right about one thing. When the moderns come under pressure it will be
a good time to be in the classics, though much of the increases in classics will have occured
    by then also
    Tempus fugit.
  • The most undervalued series is the one that a lot of people don't believe is worth ANYTHING.
An awful lot of people won't even pick one up off the ground.
The circulated Lincoln Memorial cents is the clear winner here.

What OnlyBuffalos said! For the price, some of these coins just don't seem to exist in original XF or AU (Barber Halves)

    Damn, I love these coins!!

    Tyler
  • I think $20 Libs and Saints are at great prices right now. They are selling for about $50 to $150 above their weight in gold in AU sliders and lower MS grades. These coins have some upward potential with a more limitting downside. The only problem is you'll need lots of $$$ to assemble the coins in volume. But with time on your side, everyone can put together a nice collection of them. I think that these "lower" grades have a great value as compared to their more costly brothers MS64 and above!

I also agree about Lincoln Memorial cents. When this series is over the only red one's that will be left are the ones in collections and sets. Anytime I see any on ebay that are blast red for pretty cheap I'll jump on even though I don't collect them. You just never know.
